The Grand Duchy of Nagato, commonly known as Nagato or the Nagato Grand Duchy, is a sovereign country located in the middle of the Sea of Gondwana on Urth. With an area of 474,326.3148 km2 (183,138.4139 sq mi), Nagato is the 9th largest country on Gondwana and the 45th largest country on Urth. As of 2020, Nagato had a population of 30,021,230, an estimated increase of 2.54% from 2019. With Nagatoian Codexian and Staynish making up the majority of the language spoken, the natives instead speak Genesi. In Nagato, the population is mainly Nagatoian, followed by the native Genesi people, Fódlanians, and other nationalities. The capital of Nagato is Greenwood, while Portland is the largest city.
Nagato (pronounced: [nɑː-ɡɑː-toʊ]), officially the United Unovian Republic of Nagato (Thanx: Aonaichte Uibhinn Poblachd Nagato), is a sovereign island archipelago nation located in the Sea of Gondwana, surrounded by the continent of Gondwana. With an area of 474,326.31 km2 (183,138.41 sq mi), Nagato is the 11th largest country on Gondwana and the 45th largest country on Urth. The county shares its only land border with Orderia to the southeast. As of 2020, Nagato has a population of 34,021,230, an estimated increase of 5.3% from 2010. Codexian and Gensian make up the majority of the languages spoken. The population is mainly Nagatoian (subdivided into Elissian and Gensi), followed by Augustian, Mizorian, and others. Nagato is one of five sovereign nations with two capitals: the administrative capital and largest city by area is Akai Machi, while the legislative capital and largest city by population is Castella. Nagato is one of three nations part of the Unovia Region, the others being Augustia and Orderia.

The first civilizations of the Unovia Region comprised small pockets of felines that dotted the coast sixteen thousand years ago. Following the eruption of Chargestone Caldera, more than 96% of all life died. The feline population eventually died out of the ensuing volcanic winter. The 4th century CE saw the first instance of humans from the eastern edges of Unovia. Towards the middle of the 16th century, the realms of Eastern Unovian unified under the newly formed Empire of Augustia based in Kingsford. In contrast, the various kingdoms of Western Unovia along the Unovian Archipelago unified under the Gensian Republic based in Akai Machi in the early 17th century. Beginning in the 18th century, political power for the two nations was held by a series of lords in Gensi and dukes in Augustia.
The Genesi people first migrated to the land that would later end up being New Genesis Island from the mainland of Gondwana sometime in the late 17th century. By this time, the Proto-Nagatoians would settle on the northern part of the Gondwana Strip, a sliver of land that broke off from the mainland of Gondwana sometime in the 10th century. The Nagatoians would end up establishing the Kingdom of Nagato in 1700. By the 1720s, the two cultures would meet each other when a Nagatoian sailed to current-day Portland and traded with the locals. The two would be in peace all the way until the Kingdom of Nagato falls to a coup d'etat. The Imperial State of Nagato was founded by S. R. Kakifty, who rules with an iron fist. The Kingdom Resistance escapes from the Imperial State and moves to New Genesis Island where they establish the Grand Duchy of Nagato in 1941. The Nagatoian Revolutionary War would start later that year and end with the Treaty of Nagato in 1945. In the treaty, the Imperial State of Nagato would be dissolved into the Grand Duchy of Nagato, and West and East Nagato would become a united Nagato. With the Imperial State of Nagato annexed, the Grand Duchy of Nagato became a superpower in Gondwana, with immense power in global geopolitics.

In 1644, Augustia went to war against Gensi over Elissia, the northern part of the Unovian Tail, in what became the Elissia War. The war ended in 1648 with an Augustia victory, in which the nation took Elissia and incorporated it into Augustia as the Elissian Territory of Augustia.

In 1700, the Kingdom of Nagato became a nation-state when Empress Edelgard of Augustia signed The Nagato Act, creating a nation for all Nagatoians in the Elissian Territory. In 1705, Nagato overthrew the government of the Gensian Republic and annexed the islands that made up the republic. After a four-year skirmish between rebel members and the government of Nagato, the Gensian Republic was fully incorporated into Nagato in 1709 under the Silverton government, which enacted an isolationist foreign policy. In 1864, a Great Morstaybishlia fleet forced Nagato to open trade to the East, which led to the end of the Strasberg government and the adoption of an Eastern-modeled constitution and pursuit of a program of industrialization and modernization.

In 1921, the Kingdom of Nagato established its first colony with Mizore in Southwest Gondwana after the decolonization of Tretrid in 1920. Under pressure from the global community, the Kingdom granted Mizore independence in 1936 and helped establish an oligarchy in its place.

In 1940, Robert Kelly seized control of the Kingdom by overthrowing Queen Noizi and becoming Chancellor of the Imperial State of Nagato (1940–1945). Over the next four years, the Kingdom Resistance Army, reorganized as the Duchy of Nagato (1941–1945), fought the Imperial State in the Nagatoian Civil War. After the war ended with a Duchy victory, the Imperial State was annexed to create the Grand Duchy of Nagato on 16 April 1945. Under the 1950 constitution, Nagato has maintained a unitary parliamentary semi-constitutional monarchy with a unicameral legislature, the National Council.

Nagato is a regional power in Gondwana, a middle power in international affairs, and an emerging global power. Nagato's economy is the fourth largest in Gondwana, the 25th-largest in the world by nominal GDP, and the 25th-largest by PPP. Nagato is called the Heart of Gondwana owing to its large population and economy. It is a founding member of the Intercontinental Regional Security Accords, Council of Gondwana, Unovian Commonwealth, and is a permanent member of the International Forum. Nagato ranks high in international measures of economic freedom, quality of life, education, human rights, and universal health care while also having low levels of corruption.

Etymology
Names of Nagato
The name Nagato first came from Augustians who lived in the Elissian Territory of Augustia (present-day eastern Nagato). Many saw it as their right to claim the Unovian Tail from Augustia and felt the Augustian Government was holding them back. By 1625, several high-ranking leaders in the territory started calling themselves “Nags”, shorthand for “Non-Augustians.” They used it to rally all the citizens to the cause for autonomy. Many officials in the Augustian Government used the term “Nags” to separate them from the rest of the Augustian population on census reports and official documents.

In 1698, King Ionius II of House Hresvelg of Augustia died, leaving the throne to his oldest daughter, Edelgard. Edelgard, unlike her father, saw the Nags plight for autonomy as one of her father’s weaknesses. In her 10-year plan, Edelgard laid out her plan to give up the Elissian Territory to the Nags. In exchange, they would keep all seaports free for all Augustian ships. The Nagato Act would create a nation for all Nags, who at this point became known as Nagatoians. The act was finalized and was signed into law on 1 June 1700 creating the Kingdom of Nagato.

Prehistory (before 6th century BCE)
Indigenous peoples and pre-Nagatoian history
Prehistory of Nagato
The oldest traces of life in what is now Nagato date back approximately twenty-seven thousand years ago with early felines. Over the ensuing millennia, felines were confronted by a harsh and variable climate marked by several glacial periods. Early felines led a nomadic hunter-gatherer life. Nagato has a large number of decorated caves from the mid-Stone Age, including one of the most famous and best-preserved, Felicity Caves (approximately 20,000 BCE). During the last glacial period (approximately 19,650 BCE), Chargestone Supervolcano erupted with a Volcanic Explosivity Index of 8. The eruption was so devastating that it blocked the sun worldwide for almost a decade and possibly caused a 1,000-year-long cooling episode. This led to 95.7% of all life on Gondwana dying and acted as a “soft reset” for the continent.

In mid-18,000 BCE, humans began to arrive in Nagato from what would later be known as Augustia and Vessarlian. This migration is thought to have happened due to other species invading or searching for warmer water. Since there wasn’t a dominant species in Nagato, human settlement began without any conflict from outside sources.
Not much is known about New Genesis Island before 1700, however, the island gets its name from the Genesi natives. Some sources have put the date when they settled sometime in the mid-10th century. Others have said after 1700. The Genesi are told that they have lived on the island ever since the beginning of time. We now know this is false, but no one knows when they first settled.

The climate became milder at the end of the last glacial period (9,000 BCE). As the center of Gondwana was filling up with water from glacial melt, the land started to shrink to present-day coastlines. Around 7,000 BCE, Central Gondwana entered the Neolithic era, and its inhabitants became sedentary. After strong demographic and agricultural development between the 4th and 3rd millennia, metallurgy appeared at the end of the 3rd millennium, initially working with copper and bronze and later iron. Nagato has numerous megalithic sites from the Neolithic period, including the exceptionally dense Akai stones site (approximately 3,300 BCE). Around this time, diamonds were first discovered deep in the cliffs of Chargestone Caldera. Early humans used diamonds to worship and decorate themselves for style and power.
The Genesi were very adventurous during the 1700s and into the mid-1800’s They visited many places around the Sea of Gondwana. They brought back books, instruments, new elements like Iron and Oil, and tons of food. It is said that the Genesi people started their Industrial Revolution in 1745 with the introduction of the first wind turbine in Portland, the first true city, to help with harvesting crops.

Antiquity (6th century BCE - 5th century CE)
Sometime during the mid-1800, two natives were digging into a cave south of current-day Portland when they noticed a shiny mineral in the cave wall. They told the top scientist at the time, We-Ne Le, about what they found. To Le’s surprise, it was Silicon. Le ordered a full recovery of all Silicon and whatever they might find in that cave. While in the cave, Lithium was found alongside many precious metals like Diamonds and Emeralds. The Genesi would later use these new-found elements and metals to boost the economy for many decades to come. By the time the first Nagatoians first set foot on the island in 1942, the Genesi economy was growing rapidly.

Early Middle Ages (5th - 10th century)
Nagatoian settlement
The early Middle Ages witnessed significant developments in Nagato's social, political, and cultural spheres. As various kingdoms and territories vied for influence, the foundations of Nagato's medieval society began to take shape, setting the stage for the events that would unfold in the centuries to come.

Augustian rule (1559 - 1700)
Unovia
The latter half of the 16th century saw the ascendance of Augustian influence in Nagato as the realms of Eastern Unovian unified under the newly formed Empire of Augustia. Concurrently, the various kingdoms of Western Unovia along the Unovian Archipelago rallied under the Gensian Republic, setting the stage for the unfolding dynamics between these two influential powers. The ensuing centuries were marked by a complex interplay of political influence, with lords and dukes assuming prominent roles in Gensi and Augustia. These figures wielded significant authority, shaping the sociopolitical landscape of Nagato during this period.

Late modern period (1700 - 1945)
Kingdom of Nagato (1700 - 1940)
Kingdom of Nagato
In 1700, the Kingdom of Nagato came into being through the signing of The Nagato Act by Empress Edelgard of Augustia. This pivotal document laid the foundation for a unified nation, providing a homeland for all Nagatoians in the Elissian Territory. The subsequent annexation of the Gensian Republic in 1705 marked a significant milestone in Nagato's consolidation of power, solidifying its territorial integrity. However, the isolationist policies enacted under the Silverton government in 1709 introduced a period of seclusion from the global stage, setting Nagato on a distinct development course. 1864 saw a turning point as external pressures compelled Nagato to open its doors to Eastern influences, leading to adopting an Eastern-modeled constitution and a concerted effort towards industrialization and modernization.

In 1921, Nagato embarked on a new chapter with the establishment of its first colony in Mizore, located in Southwest Gondwana. This marked a significant expansion of Nagato's influence beyond its borders. However, as the global community called for greater autonomy for Mizore, the Kingdom of Nagato granted the territory independence in 1936. This move led to establishment of an oligarchic system in place of the previous colonial administration.

The 1940’s brought about a dramatic shift in Nagato's political landscape. Robert Kelly's seizure of power through the overthrow of Queen Noizi and subsequent rise to the position of Chancellor in the Imperial State of Nagato marked a turning point in the nation's history. Over the next four years, the Kingdom Resistance Army, reconstituted as the Duchy of Nagato engaged in a protracted struggle against the forces of the Imperial State in what came to be known as the Nagatoian Civil War. The war ultimately culminated in a victory for the Duchy, leading to the annexation of the Imperial State and the establishment of the Grand Duchy of Nagato on April 16, 1945. Under the 1950 constitution, Nagato transitioned into a unitary parliamentary semi-constitutional monarchy with a unicameral legislature known as the National Council. This marked a critical step in the nation's path toward stability and governance.

Fall of the Kingdom
By 1940, the Kingdom of Nagato was collapsing. Queen Noizi’s power was limited by Prime Minister Robert Kelly after the passing of the Emergency Powers Act, which allowed Kelly to remain Prime Minister long after the expiration of his elected terms. Queen Noizi, knowing her time was limited, sent her three children to Augustia, where they would be safe with the Augustian King and his family. Unbeknownst to the Queen, Kelly developed a plan to overthrow the monarch and establish himself as the Dictator of Nagato. With a victory in sight, he declared himself the leader of the newly formed New Order (party).

On 19 September 1940, Queen Noizi and her staff met with Kelly and his allies to discuss the future of Nagato at Parliament. Although it was closed door, the meeting only lasted ten minutes. Sources have said that Kelly demanded that she step down as Queen and for himself to become the leader of Nagato. Having none of it, the Queen came up with an alternative: Kelly would stay as Prime Minister for life, and she would stay in power, but only as a figurehead. Kelly huddled around his group. Within a minute, they stood up, pushed in their chair, and collectively said, “No.” They then proceeded to leave the room. Astonished, Queen Noizi had a sinking feeling that their meeting was the last time they would see them peacefully.

When she returned to the Royal Palace, Queen Noizi started to pack whatever she could to escape Castella. Day turned into night fast. As she left her room, an attendant came to the door and told her the worst news she had ever heard: The New Order is marching towards the palace.

Several hours before, Kelly and his allies and supporters discussed what to do next in the east wing of the Parliament building. With many high-ranking military figures on his side, they discussed the ultimate plan: Overthrow the Monarch. The Nagatoian Civil War, which raged from November 26, 1940, to April 15, 1945, is a pivotal chapter in Nagato's history. The conflict pitted the forces of the Duchy of Nagato against those of the Imperial State of Nagato, with the Duchy ultimately emerging victorious. The conflict was characterized by intense military engagements across the Duchy and the Imperial State, as well as the participation of various allied factions. Notable figures such as Grand Duke William, Clorissa Anderson, Alan Clark, and others played instrumental roles in leading the Duchy forces. In contrast, figures like Robert Kelly, Evan Hudson, and Carson Powell showed the Imperial State's efforts. The Nagatoian Civil War exacted a significant toll on both sides, with casualties numbering in the tens of thousands. The resilience and determination displayed by the Duchy of Nagato and its allies ultimately tipped the scales in their favor, securing victory and paving the way for the establishment of the Grand Duchy.

Prefecture
Islands
{| class= 'wikitable sortable'
Nagato comprises 25 islands, the most populated and largest is the Unovia Tail. The Unovia Tail is also shared by the Orderia.

Geology
East Unovia Island, as well as North and West Unovia Islands are part of the Unovian Arc, which was formed by volcanic activity initiated at an undersea magma source called the Unovia Hotspot. The process continues to build islands; the tectonic plate beneath much of the Unovia Sea continually moves southwest, and the hot spot remains stationary, slowly creating new volcanoes. Mount Coronet, a volcano on Ryouko Island, is the tallest mountain in Nagato at 5,683 meters (18,645 feet) tall. Chargestone Caldera, located on East Unovia Island, southeast of Bridgeport, Nagato, is the site of the last supervolcanic eruption in Gondwana (approximately 19,650 BCE) with a Volcanic Explosivity Index of 8.

Natural disasters
Natural disasters of Nagato

During the last glacial period (approximately 19,650 BCE), Chargestone Supervolcano erupted with a Volcanic Explosivity Index of 8. The eruption was so devastating that it blocked the sun worldwide for almost a decade and possibly a 1,000-year-long cooling episode. This has led to the Chargestone catastrophic theory acting as a “soft reset.”

Climate
According to the Köppen climate classification, most of Nagato's temperate oceanic climate (or Do type) features warm summers and wet winters with frequent overcast and cloudy skies. Many laws strictly forbid damaging natural habitats, keeping most beaches in the country's natural state while attracting many tourists. Eco-tourism is highly encouraged by the government, with most hotels opting for a healthy mix of nature and the enjoyment of their guests.

Foreign relations
Geography
Foreign relations of Nagato
Nagato has a network of 212 diplomatic missions abroad and maintains relations with more than 190 countries. Nagato is a founding member of IRSA (headquartered in Castella), Council of Gondwana, Unovian Commonwealth, and is a permanent member of the International Forum. It has been influential in the Unovia Region since its inception and has maintained a strong alliance with Augustia and Mizore since 1945. Nagato promotes a unified Unovian political, economic, and security alliance with Augustia and Mizore, and has talks about one day merging into one nation.

Nagato maintains a deeply integrated relationship with neighboring Augustia, with free mobility of citizens between the two countries under the Unovian Travel Arrangement and free trade under the Unovian Commonwealth treaty. Both nations share a common history and similar cultures, self-identity, and ideas. In 2022, both governments expressed interest in merging into one nation, including Mizore.
Geology
Nagato has maintained its strong political and economic relations with Mizore since the end of Nagato’s colonial presence in 1936. In the 1970s, the Nagatoian government launched a series of economic projects to develop Mizore into an industrial, high-income economy. Mizore is now classified as an emerging developed country with an advanced economy backed by the Unovian naira. In a survey done in 2022, 83% of Mizorians had a favorable opinion of Nagato, while 79% of Nagatoians had a favorable opinion of Mizore.
New Genesis Island was created in the 10th century after a tsunami flooded the land that connected New Genesis to Genesis Island in the west. The Genesi islands were formed by volcanic activity initiated at an undersea magma source called the Genesi hotspot. The process is continuing to build islands; the tectonic plate beneath much of the Genesis Sea continually moves southwest and the hot spot remains stationary, slowly creating new volcanoes. The newest island, Thomas Island, is located northeast of the coast of New Genesis Island.

Nagato's relationship with Orderia had historically been strained because of Orderia’s views of Nagato’s growth and wealth and the many conflicts along the border. In 2018, both nations signed a security treaty allowing citizens to freely cross the border with little to no resistance, as long as they have a passport from their respective country.
Climate
Nagato has close economic and military relations with Great Morstaybishlia, which maintains a security alliance. Great Morstaybishlia is a significant market for Nagato imports and exports and is committed to defending the country, with military bases in Nagato.
According to the Köppen climate classification, most of Nagato has a temperate oceanic climate (or Do type), which features warm summers, and wet winters with frequent overcast and cloudy skies. Many laws strictly forbid damaging natural habitats, keeping most beaches in the country's natural state, all the while attracting many tourists. Eco-tourism is highly encouraged by the government, with most hotels opting for a healthy mix of nature and enjoyment of their guests.

Culture
Culture of Nagato

Nagato has been a center of Gondwanan cultural development for centuries. Many Nagatoian artists have been among the most renowned of their time; Nagato is still recognized in Gondwana for its rich cultural tradition.

Nagatoian culture is best described as a mix of Nagatoian ingenuity for the arts and culture and Gensian resourcefulness for the betterment of all that lives. This mix has caused a noticeable divide in Nagato when culture is brought up. Nagatoian culture makes up the vast majority in Eastern Nagato, while on East Unovia Island and the surrounding islands, Gensi culture is much more prominent. Ever since meeting one another, both cultures have learned to coexist and, in doing so, make each other better. Nowadays, both cultures are seen as one entity, which is also made up of other cultures like Unovian, Vessarlan, Morstaybishlian, and Tretridian.

Traditional Nagatoian-Gensian arts include crafts such as pottery, textiles, and swordmaking; performances of puppeteering, dance, and storytelling; and other practices, tea ceremonies, flower arrangments, martial arts, calligraphy, hot springs, and games. Nagato has a developed system for the protection and promotion of both tangible and intangible cultural properties and national treasures through the Ministry of Culture. The Ministry of Culture has been very active since its creation in 1957, granting subsidies to artists, promoting Nagatoian culture worldwide, supporting festivals and cultural events, and protecting historical monuments. The Nagatoian government also succeeded in maintaining a cultural exception to defend audiovisual products made in the country.

Nagatoians have traditionally been characterized by a strong work ethic, competitiveness, and individualism and a unifying belief in emphasizing liberty, equality, private property, and democracy. Nagatoians are extremely charitable by global standards: according to a 2020 Morstaybishlian study, Nagatoians gave 1.8% of their GDP to charity, more than any other nation studied.

The history of Nagatoian painting exhibits synthesis and competition between native Nagatoian esthetics and imported ideas. The interaction between Nagatoian and Gondwanan art has been significant. Examples include: woodblock prints, which began to be exported in the 19th century in the movement known as Nagism, had a considerable influence on the development of modern art in the East, most notably in Great Morstaybishlia.

Cuisine
Nagatoian cuisine

The Nagatoian cuisine is a blend of Augustian, Gensi, and Morstaybishlian cultures, with elements from Orderia, Vessarlian, and Auravas. Seafood and basmati rice or udon noodles are traditional staples dating back to the Gensian Republic in the 1200s. Food like beef and potatoes was brought by the Augustians in the 1640s. When Morstaybishlian missionaries landed on Nagato in 1864 to open trade, they introduced the citizens to cheese, roasted and stewed meats, meat and game pies, boiled vegetables, broths, and fruit pies. This mashup of different cuisines has helped Nagato create its identity while conserving its values and pride.

Seafood has traditionally accounted for a large proportion of the Nagatoian diet, especially in western Nagato. With a massive boom in commercial fishing in recent years, the islands see tons of fish like Cod and Tuna for all kinds of dishes. Delicacies in the western Nagato include blackened cod and smoked tuna. Bridgeport's Fifth Street Public Market is notable regarding this culinary style, along with Yamato and Hanakawa.

Rice and noodles have been a staple for hundreds of years. Many dishes are a combination of meat and either rice or noodles. Steak Udon is a popular dish as both ingredients are stir-fried with a broth or a paste. Another popular dish is rice bowls, generally accompanied by tuna, beef, and many vegetables.

Beef is often enjoyed more in eastern Nagato as seafood is hard to come by and livestock is very plentiful. Most dishes consist of a cut of meat, starch (typically potatoes), and a type of bread. This meal structure is typical of the Unovia Region and differs from Eastern and Southern Gondwana, though it often consists of breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Late-morning and mid-afternoon snacks are also usually included in this meal structure.

Bread is a significant part of eastern Nagatoian cuisine, and Nagatoian bakeries produce about 300 main types of bread and 900 types of pastries and rolls.

Popular Nagatoian beverages include rice wine, which typically contains 14–17% alcohol and is made by multiple fermentation of rice. Beer has been brewed in Nagato since the late 17th century. Wine has become popular in many parts of the country, especially in the Southern Nagato Wine Region. In 2021, Nagato was the fifth-largest wine producer in the world.

Nagato is the world's second-highest per capita cider consumption and the second-largest cider-producing country on Urth behind Augustia. Ciders from Tanigawa are generally more robust. Cider is also popular in Mizore as an alternative to hard liquor. In Great Morstaybishlia, varieties of fermented cider are often called hard cider to distinguish alcoholic cider from non-alcoholic apple cider or "sweet cider," also made from apples. In Augustia, cider cannot contain less than 2.5% or over 13% absolute alcohol by volume.

Judo is widely known as Nagato’s national sport. Created in 1885 by Kano Jiro and Kyuzo Miza, Judo was used as a form of exercise by the Gensi of East Unovia Island. Many teachers of Judo, like Jiro and Miza, taught classes of 20 or less in a small, matted room where anyone could master the technique of Judo. In 1899, Judo made its way to eastern Nagato, with most citizens seeing Judo as a self-defense technique. Miza took this reaction as a way to increase the potential of Judo to the masses and started teaching Judo to little to no experienced customers. Judo, eventually, became part of the compulsory junior high school curriculum in 1912 and the military in 1913. Judo has been recognized as one of the five great martial arts on Urth and included in the Aldanic Games since the 1950 Salovia Aldanic Games.

Association football has been the most popular sport in Nagato ever since Morstaybishlian Missionaries sailed to Castella in 1872. Since then, Nagato has dominated the Unovia Region and Northeastern Gondwana but has yet to win a single World Cup. The Nagatoian national football team is headquartered in Castella at the Spiegelman Thunderdome Stadium. The team’s biggest rivals are the Augustian national football team and the Orderia national football team.

Throughout Nagato, there are many different football clubs. Castella Football Club and Kellsthrope United Football Club are the oldest and the best teams, with a win-to-loss ratio of 85% and 83%, respectively. Other groups include Kirkwood United FC, Langley United FC, Nakata United FC, Watakawa United FC, Tanigawa United FC, Hirasaka United FC, and Akai Shuto United FC.

Track and field have been considered Nagato’s third national sport, after football and Judo. Events like long-distance running and marathons have been popularized in Nagato and exported to other places worldwide.

Nagato hosted the Summer Aldanic in Castella in 1972 and 1996, making Castella the third Gondwanan city to host the Aldanic twice. The country has also gained the hosting rights for the official World Athletics Championships on five occasions, more than any other nation.

Physical fitness is emphasized in Nagatoian culture, with morning exercises practiced, commercial gyms and private fitness clubs popular across the country, and many activities like biking, swimming, and track and field.

Mass media
The three major television broadcasters in Nagato are the Nagatoian Broadcasting Company (NBC), Unovian Broadcasting Company (UBC), and the Gondwana Television Network (GTN); these three networks are all commercial entities. Cable television offers hundreds of channels catering to a variety of niches.

Nagato commercial radio broadcasting includes FM stations and AM stations. In addition, there are numerous public radio stations run by universities and public authorities for educational purposes and internet-based radio stations run by anyone with an internet connection and an Internet Commercial Radio Broadcasting License (ICRBL). As of June 2022, there are 854 licensed full-power radio stations in Nagato, according to the Nagatoian Communications Commission (NCC).

The national newspaper of Nagato is the Nagatoian News. Although the cost of publishing has increased over the years, the price of newspapers has remained low, forcing Nagatoian News to rely more on advertising revenue and articles provided by advertisement firms and political parties. Most city and department newspapers have gone online, while some have dual versions online and in print. Major cities often have "alternative weeklies" to complement the mainstream daily papers, such as Castella’s The Peninsula Perceptive, Akai Machi’s AM Weekly, or Arlesbridge’s The Emerald Leader. Major cities may also support a local business journal, trade papers relating to local industries, and papers for local ethnic, social, and political groups.

The flag of Nagato is called the Nagatoian Phoenix. It was created in 1945 as a replacement for the Duchy of Nagato’s flag, which was used during the Nagatoian Civil War. The colors on the flag are (from top to bottom): Unovian Red, White, Emerald Green, White, and Gensi Blue. In the middle of the flag is an image of the Unovian Phoenix, the symbol for the Unovia Region, surrounded by a Gensi Blue circle with a white border. Between each bar color is a white stripe.

The Unovian Phoenix and the coat of arms of Nagato have ties to the region of Unovia, along with Augustia and the northern part of Orderia. All three countries were at one point part of Augustia, represented by the Unovian Phoenix.

The national anthem of Nagato is Together by Fumie Akiyoshi, translated by Hiltonium and Fé van Kessel. The anthem was originally a Gensi fight song by Fumie Akiyoshi in 1942 and was used as the unofficial anthem of the Duchy of Nagato. Mentions of Mount Coronet, rock climbing, and multi-battle victories can be heard throughout the song and a line about Nagato’s ever-growing list of battles it has been in.

Etymology

History

Prehistory (before 6th century BCE)

Antiquity (6th century BCE - 5th century CE)

Early Middle Ages (5th - 10th century)

The early Middle Ages witnessed significant developments in Nagato's social, political, and cultural spheres. As various kingdoms and territories vied for influence, the foundations of Nagato's medieval society began to take shape, setting the stage for the events that would unfold in the centuries to come.

High and Late Middle Ages (10th - 15th century)

Early modern period (15th century - 1700)

Nagatoian settlement (15th century - 1559)

Augustian rule (1559 - 1700)

The Palace of Queen Noizi on Fire, 1940, by unknown artist.

Equipped with rifles and bayonets, Kelly led his allies and supporters through the streets of Castella towards the Queen’s Residence, urging anyone not happy with the Queen to join the rebelling.

Nagatoian Golden Era (1945 - 1999)

The period following the Nagatoian Civil War ushered in an era of growth, stability, and prosperity for Nagato. From 1945 to 1999, the nation experienced a Golden Era marked by economic expansion, technological advancement, and cultural flourishing. The United Republic of Nagato emerged as a regional power in Gondwana, contributing significantly to the broader geopolitical landscape. During this time, Nagato's economy thrived, propelling it to become the fourth-largest in Gondwana. Technological innovation and modernization efforts fueled advancements across various industries, positioning Nagato as a critical player in international affairs. Culturally, Nagato experienced a renaissance, with the arts, sciences, and literature thriving. This period of cultural flourishing left an indelible mark on Nagato's identity, shaping the nation's legacy for generations to come.

The nation's proactive stance on environmental sustainability and low levels of corruption further contribute to its reputation on the global stage. As of today, Nagato stands as an emerging global power with a resilient society and a forward-looking approach to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

Geography

Islands

Nagato has close economic and military relations with Great Morstaybishlia, which maintains a security alliance. Great Morstaybishlia is a significant market for Nagato imports and exports and is committed to defending the country, with military bases in Nagato.

Culture

Visual art

The history of Nagatoian painting exhibits synthesis and competition between native Nagatoian esthetics and imported ideas. The interaction between Nagatoian and Gondwanan art has been significant. Examples include: woodblock prints, which began to be exported in the 19th century in the movement known as Nagism, had a considerable influence on the development of modern art in the East, most notably in Great Morstaybishlia.

Cuisine

Salmon and Potato Bake, the national dish of Nagato

Bridgeport’s Fifth Street Public Market’s Provisions Food Hall

Seafood has traditionally accounted for a large proportion of the Nagatoian diet, especially in western Nagato. With a massive boom in commercial fishing in recent years, the islands see tons of fish like Cod and Tuna for all kinds of dishes. Delicacies in the western Nagato include blackened cod and smoked tuna. Bridgeport's Fifth Street Public Market is notable regarding this culinary style, along with Yamato and Hanakawa.

Steak Udon, a staple of Nagatoian cuisine

Sports

Kyuzo Miza (left) and Kano Jiro (right)

Spiegelman Thunderdome Stadium in 2015

Nagato Coat of Arms

The flag of Nagato is called the Nagatoian Phoenix. It was created in 1945 as a replacement for the Duchy of Nagato’s flag, which was used during the Nagatoian Civil War. The colors on the flag are (from top to bottom): Unovian Red, White, Emerald Green, White, and Gensi Blue. In the middle of the flag is an image of the Unovian Phoenix, the symbol for the Unovia Region, surrounded by a Gensi Blue circle with a white border. Between each bar color is a white stripe.
