The grand duke of Nagato is the monarchical head of state of Nagato. Nagato has been a grand duchy since 21 September 1945, when it was created from the collapse of the Kingdom of Nagato. After the rise of the Imperial State of Nagato (East Nagato), at the time Duke of Kellsthrope, William, fled to East Unovia Island along with resistant forces. There, on 21 September 1941, William established the Duchy of Nagato (West Nagato) and him as Duke of Nagato. With his leadership, the Imperial State of Nagato fell and was annexed into Nagato, creating the Grand Duchy of Nagato and William as Grand Duke. Nagato is one of the world's only sovereign grand duchy and since 1941, there have been three monarchs, including the incumbent, Daniel.

Constitutional role

The constitution of Nagato defines the grand duke's position:

The grand duke is the head of state, the symbol of its unity, and guarantor of national independence. He exercises executive power in accordance with the constitution and the laws of the country.

The grand duke does not receive a salary, but the royal family receives annually ₦400,000 ($357,143 SHD) for grand-ducal functions. In 2021, the Nagato budget included ₦12.1 million for the grand duke's household costs.

An heir apparent may be granted the style 'hereditary grand duke'. The current heir apparent is Hereditary Grand Duke James.
