The diplomatic relationships of the Imperial Vistari Confederation are directed through the Imperial Commission on International Relations (Vistarian: Keizerlijke Commissie voor Internationale Betrekkingen, VCIB), an overarching governmental department comprising the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Ministry of Commonwealth Affairs and, since 1994, the remainder of the Colonial Office. Created in the Molebaai Decree of 1936 and reorganized under the Consolidation of Diplomatic Duties Act 1951, the Commission oversees and coordinates the three separate departments and works alongside the Vistari Government in developing foreign policy strategies.

Under the Vistari Rijk and later Ducal Federation, Vistaraland played a prominent role around the globe in both great-power politics and, more importantly, international trade. Though never truly rising to be considered a superpower by most criteria, Vistaraland continues to exert its role as a great power through both its considerable degree of hard power as having long held a substantive economic and military presence, as well as its large degree of influence within the Vistara Commonwealth and its member states. Though Vistaraland would enter into long-standing cooperation with Great Morstaybishlia and Salovia, the former still lasting to this day as the informally named 1709 Alliance, they retained a primarily unilateral diplomatic strategy which focused on maintaining the Empire's territorial integrity through the pragmatic affirmation of self-interest when interacting with other states. This pragmatism included the policy of trade, which prioritized the opening of markets to Vistari goods and the securing of necessary strategic resources over ethical, cultural or historical clashes. The combination of these two strategies, enacted in force during the Ducal Federation, became known as Weverism. Weverism, named after the economist and notable abolitionist politician Alfred Wever, has played a role in numerous Vistari leaders' foreign policy from the 18th Century up until the present day - and has influenced a number of controversial policy decisions such as Vistari neutrality in the 2020 Puntalian Crisis and the signing of trade treaties with states with sapient rights issues, such as MIDAS with Kæra'zna in 2022. Despite contentions with such policies and previously-held concerns of the organization as a potential force for decolonization, Vistaraland became a member of the International Forum in 1925.

Vistaraland was a founding member of the Intercontinental Regional Security Accords in 2006, and possesses the second largest military by active personnel and budget within the alliance, behind only Great Morstaybishlia. In 2020, Vistaraland became one of the three founding members of the Pact of Rosaheim as well as becoming a member of the North Concordian Economic Forum - with the nation expected to take a prominent role in both organizations in the future.

Due to the intercontinental nature of Vistaraland - with territory in Yasteria, Arcturia, Gondwana, Aurora and Borea, engagement in regional intergovernmental organizations is often de jure or at least de facto devolved to constituent countries within the Confederation. Though originally observing the organization, Valerijk was permitted to join OFAC as a full member in 1984 and therefore set precedent for the Vistari Government to allow for the negotiation of constituent entities within the state to participate in regional organizations. Since the allowance of such measures, Vorpest was given the position of member amongst the Borea Assembly, which the Vorpestian government has utilised to take a considerable role in the gathering of finances and overall foundation of the Borean Unified Natural Defence Siren (BUNDS), following the 2021 Aduraszna quake and tsunami. Thee previously acknowledged Ducal or Mainland Vistaraland, now officially the Constituent Kingdom of Vistaraland, additionally gained representation at the Association of Yasterian Nations, participating within the organization's initiative on free trade - though remained outside the proposed Free Travel Area citing a preference to maintaining the bilateral Kromentrum Open Border Treaty with the Western Provinces. In 2022, Wescernia would become a signatory territory of the Oceanic Triad Agreement, which includes K'undzeti and the Norgsveltian Crown State of Vakrestrender.

While observer status within the Council of Gondwana is granted to Vistaraland as a whole, notably so as to avoid only representing one of the two Grand Dominions on the continent, the position of observer is often considered amongst the VCIB as de facto granted to Vistari North Gondwana. Other organizations in which devolution is an unwritten expectation include the Rotantic Congress de facto devolved to Vorpest.
