Vekaiyu Missile Defense Zone
The Vekaiyu Missile Defense Zone, formally known as the Vekaiyun Metropolitan Defense System, is a system designed to ward against missile attacks aimed at Vekaiyun cities. The zone, which was deemed operational on January 16th, 2012, was signed on by Ler Commodore Vanse Lebivistre, who believed that the large metropolitan areas needed extra and immediate defense against any potential enemy fire. The defense zone operates via a series of towers, colloquially known as "obelisks", which "switch on" when a foreign object enters the zone. The nearest obelisks deliver a strong electric surge to the foreign object, strong enough to obliterate or disable the device.
This zone was first tested in the 2012 Listonian War on January 24th, 2012. At approximately 7:40 PM VST, two missiles launched near Evesunigrad penetrated Vekaiyun airspace. Their target, the city of Skendia, was able to fend off both missiles, though not without inherent problems. The first missile, a ks-11, was obliterated mid-flight by towers 5, 6, and 7. Citizens reported three distinct hums at different pitches as each tower was primed. The explosion lit the night sky with a three-pronged blast. The second missile, another ks-11, was fired upon by towers 5, 6, and 8 in similar fashion as before, but the blast merely knocked the warhead off course. It was later obliterated by towers 1, 3, and 4 seconds later.
The system is typically dormant as to prevent any problems with aircraft and other objects in metropolitan airspace, but the triangulation system used is controlled by a series of guidance computers manned by Vekaiyun Military Personnel who are able to track and identify incoming objects.
