Axdel (Axdan: Axdelia), officially known as The Federation of Axdel, is a sovereign federal state which unites the three countries of Korstazia, Lyrevale and Quartz Fern Coast. It is situated in South-West Aurora bordering the nations of Emberwood Coast, Great Morstaybishlia, and Oceansend, and is the second largest by land area on the continent. The largest and capital city of Andel is a megacity with 11 million people, followed by Fenrir.

Since the end of the bronze age, the region was dominated by the Kormistazic empire and its satellite states. The Norvians invaded the area in the early 8th century and introduced what would become Axdan language. The Kormistazic Empire also established and administered colonial territories on Arcturia for several centuries. After a five decade long series of invasions by Morstaybishlia in the 16th century, the area was incorporated into the empire and was known as Korstazia, later becoming a principality. The Auroran Imperial War saw Korstazia gain independence as Norograd, before Axdel was founded after the Norograd Civil War in 1996.

Axdel is a developed nation and is considered a regional power with the 3rd largest GDP and military budget on Aurora. It is also one of the largest countries on Urth, being the the 6th largest by land area and 10th largest by population. It also ranks highly in metrics of rates of civil liberties, education rates, and income equality.

Axdel is a largely temperate nation with significant deciduous forest coverage and fertile land which has been extensively used for agriculture. The climate ranges from humid subtropical along the north coast, humid continental in the interior regions and temperate oceanic along the southern coast. The Zycannes mountain range terminates along the Eastern border, with the Teba mountains forming the backbone of the nation and terminating with the Auric mountains along the coast. Axdel generates income from various sources, including energy, manufacturing, mining and agricultural exports, and international education.

Axdel is a member state of the United Nations of the Auroran Continent and the Intercontinental Regional Security Accords, and uses the multinational Kirib(♅) as its currency alongside many other Auroran Nations.

History

Prehistory

Archaeological evidence suggests that human hunter gatherers originating from lake Lamberta arrived in the region at approximately 49,500BCE, and is the the first undisputed evidence of habitation. However, the controversial Cava man remains discovered in the Teba mountains, dated to 250,000BCE, are still considered by some archaeologists to be evidence of previous intelligent life in the area. In 35,000BCE the Chomlec culture emerged on the North coast of the western auroran peninsula of interconnected tribes and families. The Neolithic era emerged at approximately 10,000BCE after the emergence of agriculture and prompted the first permanent settlements at this time. The oldest known city in South West Aurora upon the site of modern-day Montza was founded in approximately 5600BCE by the Teba-Ulta culture. Metallurgy was independently developed in 4000BCE, with copper, silver and gold metalworking spreading rapidly across the region and driving a period of productivity increases and rapid urbanisation. Bronze working would later be introduced by migrants from the area of modern Staynes.

Bronze Age

In the middle highlands of the region, Baza Galleas of the Teba culture established the Teba Empire in 2972BCE, conquering the entire head of the Euclid river valley surrounding the capitol city of Montza. The Teba empire followed a polytheistic pantheon in which the god of harvest was also the god of war, and thus the empire sought to acquire the farmland to appease them. Further south at the mouth of the Euclid, the Soltic Culture established a Monarchic kingdom in 2804BCE known as the Soltic kingdom. The two states soon ran into each other as they expanded control over the valuable farmland of the river valley, and a dispute in 2765BCE led to a series of clashes over several decades known as the Teba-Soltic war. The war eventually ended with the Teba Empire claiming victory in 2724BCE and dominating the entire valley. However, Baza Galleas III led a successful uprising in 2564BCE, pushing the Teba empire back up the Euclid. Content with the Teba empire being driven back, Baza then set about expanding control over the North coast, leading several campaigns against often unincorporated towns and villages until his death in 2531BCE.

Earlier, in 4280BCE, the earliest recorded incidence of Kormistazic culture emerged with druidic communities in the area around modern Fort Sekan who shared their philosophy and religious ideas began living in larger settlements. These people believed in an early incarnation of Kozam, a polytheistic religion with cosmic duality of the two major gods, Sek and Noct. Followers were commonly divided into two sects, following either Sek; the god of life and creation, or Noct; the god of reclamation and the afterlife, respectively. The two sects initially had coexisting cultures, with the Sek peoples striving for internal peace, bountiful harvest, education, and love, whilst the Noct peoples strove for craft, trade, tradition, and order, though it later became more common to embody both after several skirmishes between rival settlements of opposite worship. In 2108BCE, the Kormistazic city state of Sekapolis was founded and by 2076BCE local communities had been incorporated under a body known as the Kormistazic Holy Confederacy ruled by a cabal of Kozam priests. In 1998BCE, the westerly neighbouring Janus Kingdom declared Kozam to be heretical to its own pantheon after a large number the population began converting to it. An 18 year war ensued which saw the the Confederacy absorb the Kingdom and execute every heir to their throne to symbolically destroy any hope of its resurgence.

With the turn of the millenium, and the cessation of warfare between the Teba and Neo-Soltics, there was a boom of trade and multiple powerful Kingdoms and chiefdoms emerged, the most notable of which being the Kingdom of Mularia. Mularia was situated in the Montekaan plateau of the Zycannes, and became very prosperous by exploiting the vast mineral wealth of the surrounding mountains. Mularian metal was even traded north through the Molvian Corridor to the usually defensive Maltervenia. With the reignition of conflict between the Teba Empire and the Neo-Soltics and their expansions of influence outside of the Euclid valley, Mularia was guaranteed neutrality thanks to its defensive position high in the mountains and continued to profit with the sale of bronze weaponry.

Koriba Collapse

in 1629BCE, the Koriba volcano in Central Lyrevale experienced a series of unusually powerful eruptions, exploding multiple times over the course of five years and releasing a colossal amount of ash into the atmosphere. Each eruption caused a volcanic winter which disrupted agriculture, reducing crop yields and leading to widespread famine across south-west Aurora. Whilst there were only a few scattered states in the area around the eruption, all were destroyed in the aftermath, with several towns in the vicinity repeatedly hit by pyroclastic flows and raining lava. Ash was circulated around the Lyr valley and choked much of the farmland. The rivers were said to have run grey and smelt sulphurous causing illness in those who drank the water.

In the east, trade networks collapsed and the kingdoms which had prospered for the prior centuries recessed and collapsed. Kormistazm was amongst the hardest hit, with Sekapolis losing over a third of its population. Despite this the popularity of Kozam boomed and several surrounding chiefs and kings converted and joined with the confederation. The Weakening of the Neo-Soltics on the North coast and their retreat to the Euclid valley and Mularia rapidly reducing in power allowed the small city-state of Vila to expand its territory along the coast and begin conquering settlements along trade routes in the area under a military government ruled by Xuris I. Soon, Vila rivalled the other three powers in the north in terms of military and economic strength and a period marked by territorial feuds between them and the crippled Mularia, driving them all the may up to the beginning of the plateau.

Kveshi Empire and Oceansend

In 720BCE, the maritime Kveshi Empire established a settlement on the coast of South West Aurora. Relations between the Kveshi and Kormistazm mainly involved the trade of crops and livestock, though also the exchange of technologies. The introduction of advanced ironworking by the Kveshi marked the beginning of the iron age in the region. With trade increasing in volume and profitability, the Kveshi expanded their holdings by driving people from the lands surrounding the city to create a buffer zone and facilitate agriculture to support the growing population. The Kormistazic government endeavoured to make sure they could monopolise trade from the distant empire.

Iron Age and Kormistazic Expansion

The territorialpeak of the Kormistazic Empire

By 532BCE, the major Kormistazic city-states and settlements of the Holy Confederacy coalesced into an empire. This is been shown to have happened after an influential but unnamed priest assembled a council from several major settlements from the Eastern region and declared himself emperor in the name of the gods and their idols. An invasion force from Sekapolis from which he was unable to defend against saw him executed. However, the leader of the army turned back and invaded the capitol too, removing the government from power in a bloodless coup, declaring himself emperor. Known as Kayus Hunnes, he made an exodus into the south-western Zycannes and returned with a rudimentary imperial constitution, which he claimed was gifted upon him via divine inspiration. A council of religious representatives from both sects was assembled as an embodiment of both Sek and Nocts powers combined to rightfully rule over the Kormistazic populace. It was at this time that the revised religious text of Kozam, Kairos, tome of the earth, were published by the prophet Jakatai Kalamitas. The empire first incorporated Kozam-worshipping settlements that were often already part of the former Confederacy, before engulfing the Empires and Kingdoms of the entire eastern peninsular of the Auroran continent as well as areas of the divided Maltervenian empire over a 500 year conquest.

With the turn of the millennium, however, the Kormistazic empire was marred by a period of several centuries populated by multiple civil wars by ambitious rival leader and independence attempts by disgruntled regions, By the 6th century AD, the empire had continued its slow eastward expansion and had significantly advanced technologically. The empire continued westward, encroaching slowly into the loosely incorporated Ethalrian territory, halting in 940AD after a major armed skirmish and subsequent peace agreement. Then came an age of internal harmony and progress for the core Kormistazic territories that were no longer busied by expansion and conflict with their neighbours. Great mathematicians and engineers emerged, producing great works of architecture, astronomy, and mathematical theory.

In 1523, the Kormistazic city of Fort Montekaan was attacked by legions from the Morstaybishlian Empire led by king Slev III. This was provoked after the discovery of a large gold deposit on the Jaan river, a historic border between the two nations. With Montekaan able to project power over the area and thus legitimise the Kormistazic claim to the deposit, it logically had to be taken over for Morstaybishlia to be able to lay their own claim. However, Montekaan was pre-warned of the attack and ambushed the attacking legions as they attempted to siege the city. All but a few soldiers were massacred in battle, and Slev III was publicly executed to humiliate the Morstaybishlians. Emperor Honoluras Faithful, intent on leading a counter attack against the Morstaybishlian empire, rallied an army to the city, though word of a massive impending attack by the new king Lambertus IV meant he ordered a large number of troops to lie in wait along Zate marsh to intercept it. Bypassing Zate marsh by taking a risky route along several mountain passes of the Zycannes, the Morstaybishlian army led a devastating attack on the city, taking it within days and leading to Honoluras' death before reinforcements could arrive. All subsequent attempts to retake Fort Montekaan were unsuccessful due to being hampered by a series of poor winters and an increasing number of Morstaybishlian forces in the city.

Norograd

main article: Norograd
In 1897, the socialist economist and sociologist Freidrik Noros published 'Imperialism, Colonialism, and Capitalism' in which he outlined and analysed how the people of the Kormistazic principality had been exploited and oppressed not only by economic industrialisation and consequent wage labour, but that even relative to the core Morstaybishlian states they were treated akin to a conquered territory by the capitol. He explicitly pointed to how many labour laws (whilst still simply introduced as a necessity to distract the workers from socialist ideology) of the MBE had not been extended to the Kormistazic principality as the house of lords had argued it would harm productivity. The Norograd civil war

Below is old and crap

At the dusk of the 1980's, Norograd entered its first stages of decline. Organised protests across the nation demanding national reform became more commonplace, violent, and twisted, occasionally evolving into riots. Worried by these events, Kiet Narvga initiated a scheme to increase national cohesiveness via passive eugenic programs. Such programs were inspired by similar successful implementations in other nations across Urth. The programme was kept out of the public eye, and involved 'diagnosing' undesirable individuals in the population with an obscure disease, and then sterilising them with false medication. Targeted individuals were those that showed association with violent 'freedom fighter' groups, as well as those with chronic genetic disorders and poor mental acuity. The ultimate goal was to make Norograd a cohesive, intelligent, and stable society capable of surviving for centuries, even without a centralised state as Kiet had hoped for future Norograd.

In 1994 however, an as of yet unidentified hacker operating from a public library broke into Norogradian government files referencing the Eugenics program, as well as revealing the existence of bio-warfare divisions and research on engineered bioweapons that was also occurring at the time. Shortly after the breach, the information was leaked to the public, causing an outcry among the freedom fighter groups, many of which were specifically mentioned as targets of the sterilisation program. Occourrence of organised riots spiked across the nation, and within months of the leaks, several organised militias had emerged, most notably the anarcho-communist Norograd Armed Rebels (NAR - not to be confused with the Norograd Armed Resistance terrorist organisation). It was at this time that a coalition of democratic politicians and political philosophers was refounded, known as the Axdel coalition. However, they were overshadowed by the armed militias that had begun amalgamating into the NAR to form a single paramilitary force.

On new years eve 1994, Keit Narvga declared martial law in Norograd, and civilian police patrols were replaced with armed convoys and military units. The NAR had become so entrenched within society that it was as easy to join as it was to apply for a gym membership. In 1995 alone, there were half a dozen assassination of key generals and political figures, notably Darius Finch, Narvga's right hand man since the 60's. Keit himself was targeted many times, albeit all were unsuccessful. Emigration from Norograd spiked as law enforcement became more drastic. Soldiers in city streets could expect to be hailed by gunfire from windows and alleys. Thousands died during this period, with many tens of thousands fleeing the country, primarily to either Emberwood coast or Staynes. At the same time, the Axdel coalition was gaining presence, and was in constant communication with the Staynish government requesting the resources and funds that would be necessary to sway the Norogradian populace over to their cause. Small democratic militias were being recruited to disperse food, medical supplies and water to those who needed them most, and radio stations constantly broadcast messages from the coalition leaders to inform the citizenry of where to find them.

A chemical plant explosion during the height of war

In Spring 1996, another data breach hit Norograd, this time revealing military locations and stockpiles. This breach was unlike the first though, because it went undetected for months, and was orchestrated by the NAR directly. The NAR, using the information retrieved from the hack, plotted a takeover of a 1970's Kilkati military bunker complex used for mass storage of rations and weaponry; exactly what the NAR needed to wage a war against the government. On the 6th of April, the assault on the complex took place, and armed with in-depth knowledge of the facilities security and its flaws, the NAR were successful in capturing it. Military forces attempted to retake the bunker, though were unsuccessful and were driven back from the land surrounding the entrance. From this point on, it was all out war between the NAR and the Governmental forces, with a major offensive being lead against the capital, Andel.

Several months passed, and the campaign into Andel had devolved into guerilla warfare and deep incursions into enemy territory from both sides. However, the NAR seemed to be prevailing, and by late august, the rebel forces had the government forces under siege within the city center. In other cities across the country not heavily involved in the conflict, the Axdel coalition and its Staynish assets began coordinating massive relief and rebuilding efforts, providing food and water to those in need and aiding neighbourhoods. At this point, Kiet Narvga knew he had lost the war. On the first of September and without warning, he managed to smuggle himself out of Andel, and was presumed to have emigrated to Staynes under a new identity. The NAR and governmental remnants promptly declared a cease fire the next day, both sides weighed down by heavy casualties. Now, the freshly formed Axdelian Government asserted control over the capital, beginning cleaning and rebuilding efforts. It declared itself the legal government, which the United Kingdom quickly recognised. soon after, the Axdelian constitution was then decreed, and with it the laws and rights of citizens were lifted from military junta, forming modern-day Axdel, and declaring the end of the civil war on September the 11th 1996. Civil unrest continues to this day, as NAR splinter factions and Norogradian Government supporters stir occasionally, though it has significantly declined over the years. The identity of the hacker that initiated the war and the country from which they originated remains unknown.

Politics

Governance

The political system of the Democratic States of Axdel is, as the name suggests, highly democratic. The nation hosts quinquennial general elections in which parties compete to be voted into office by a majority of public votes. There are 588 seats in legislature, which is unicameral. The number of seats in the National Assembly from each party is determined via single transferable vote across 84 constituencies, with each constituency producing 7 representatives. the National assembly is predominantly composed of left wing parties, with much of Axdelian legislature being pro-socialised healthcare, pro-nationalisation of industry, and anti-free market to an extent, though there is often fierce opposition from more conservative parties.

Arch Visualisation of Seats held by parties in the Axdelian National Assembly

Anyone in Axdel can campaign for presidency or form their own political party. There are currently over 67 recognised parties, however most fail to gain even 0.1% of popular vote. The three most prominent parties in Axdel are the Labour Union Party, the Conservative Initiative Party, and the Constitutional Founders Party, with each gaining 37.1%, 23.6%, and 22.3% of voters respectively in the 2018 general election. The Labour Union party is currently in a coalition with the Second Commune party.

Regions and States

Axdel is comprised of seven states, each determined by historical cultural and administrative divisions dating back before the morstaybishlian conquest. The country is also divided into 84 constituencies, independent of state boundaries, which are used to determine representatives in the national assembly. Each constituency is worth 7 representatives, and is comprised of roughly 800,000 citizens, giving 115,000 citizens per representative. They are occasionally altered to reflect changes in population spread.

Military

Main article: Axdel Armed Forces

The Axdel Armed Forces are the military forces of Axdel, under the commander-in-chief president Diego Corbinn. It consists of the Axdelian army, the Axdelian Navy, the Axdelian air force, and reconnaissance, which is dedicated to military intelligence. Axdel is currently part of a nuclear disarmament treaty with the SCE, Ethalria, and the former Kostov nations, and itself vows to completely abandon nuclear weapons by 2030. The military runs on a 'one step ahead of you' policy, with a relatively large portion of departmental spending being focussed on reconnaissance and deterrence. A strong alliance and shared-use pact is held with the Morstaybishlian Armed Forces, and allows the Axdelian armed forces to operate globally using RAFOTE facilities if required. Military spending accounts for roughly 2% of the nations GDP, or around A♅47bn.

Economy

The economy of Axdel is worth approximately 2.37 trillion Kiribs, and is bolstered by the nation's ubiquitous coastal access.

Demographics

Axdel is a multispecies human-majority country with a multitude of other species form minority groups in the nation. This dates back to the 1500's when Lupine religious refugees from Volkia found safety with the Kormistazic empire in south west Aurora in exchange for aid fighting the Morstaybishlian Empire, later arriving in large numbers. After the conclusion of the Western Auroran Crusades, many of these lupines settled in areas of modern-day Axdel, becoming an integral part of local cultures.

Whilst ethnic Axdelians compose the vast majority of the population, Axdel's history as a principality of the Morstaybishlian Empire and the contemporary free movement of workers held under the Auroran Continental Assembly and United Nations of the Auroran Continent mean that there is a large proportion of ethnic Staynish, Caltharusian, Emberitian and Lyrevalian peoples in the nation. The cultural diversity provided by such a mix of people is generally considered to be beneficial and widely accepted.

Axdel is highly urbanised, with approximately 83.5% of the population residing within urban townships or cities. Andel is the nations only mega city, with a population of 11.4 million inhabitants.
