The International Technology Centres Index is a ranking of the most influential areas in the world for technology. A city or area on this list is known as a tech hub and is characterised as follows: the presence of large and influential technology companies, research and development activities, technology startups, technology oriented venture capital finance, highly ranked universities, and a large population of skilled people in the technology sector. Industries characterised as part of the tech scene include extremely high value added scalable computing and software development, semi conductor manufacturing, biotechnology etc.
