Eoforwine Æthelstanesunu became Prime Minister of Tretrid on December 12, 2016 after forming a caretaker government at the invitation of King Ælfric III, succeeding Æthelred Wulfricson. While prime minister, Æthelstanesunu has aggressively pushed for the revitalization of the welfare system and stricter regulation of the markets, as well as the bolstering of transparency measures within the Tretridian government.

Æthelstanesunu was appointed as prime minister as a result of the collapse of the previous government in a series of wide-ranging corruption scandals that heavily implicated the government. With his caretaker government, Æthelstanesunu sought the investigation and prosecution of these allegations of prosecutions, as well as several stopgap measures intended to bolster confidence in the Tretridian government. The government also sought the immediate calling of snap elections, which were eventually carried out in a month.

Æthelstanesunu was reelected under a ÞSD-ÞUD coalition as a result of these 2017 snap elections. Under this government, Æthelstanesunu brought about bolstered labor laws, stricter anti-corruption laws, expanded welfare measures, the nationalization of utilities, and the expansion of LGBTQ+ rights. Æthelstanesunu also oversaw Tretridian involvement in the Auroran-Cerenerian War, which was largely received as successful, and helped bring about the League of Novaris with the signing of the Sixfold Declaration.

Æthelstanesunu was reelected a second time in 2020. His third government would largely be shaped by the Correvan Crisis and its aftermath. Æthelstanesunu faced widespread criticism for his handling of Correva, with his approval ratings falling by about 10% from July to September of 2020. Under Æthelsansunu, Tretrid became a founding member of the Tolinsk Accords near the end of 2020, mediated the Kanor Accords between Tavaris and Meagharia, and, at the behest of then-Norgsveltian Prime Minister Johanna Sverdrup, brought Tretrid into the North Concordian Economic Forum.

Æthelstanesunu would also bring Tretrid into the Balistrian Coalition War due to an alliance that Tretrid and Alksearia had formed some months earlier. While Tretridian involvement in the war were largely regarded as successful, the government became plagued with allegations of the use of terror bombing campaigns and possible illegal use of white phosphorus munitions in the prosecution of the war. Æthelstanesunu and other government officials repeatedly denied the illegal use of white phosphorus and claimed that the Tretridian bombing campaign was "targeted."

Æthelstanesunu's handling of Correva eventually led then-LN Secretary General Æthelwine Heardesunu to publicly denounce Æthelstanesunu's actions upon being reelected in June 2021, which caused another wave of criticism of the government like had happened the previous year.

Domestic policy

Nationalization

Tretrid's private utility companies were heavily implicated in the scandals surrounding the Wulfricesunu government, which Æthelstanesunu argued was an inevitable consequence of privatization. At Æthelstanesunu's urging, the government passed the Corruption Controls Act in May 2017, which took temporary state control of previously privatized utilities pending investigations of corruption.

In 2019, at Æthelstanesunu's direction, the Witenagemot passed the Utilities Act in 2019, which formally nationalized utilities that the government had taken control of with the Corruption Controls Act while requiring the government to financially compensate previous owners that had not participated in corruption. Notably, the ÞUD, while recommending that its members vote for the measure, stated that it wouldn't punish members for voting against it.

Sectors largely affected by the Corruption Controls Act and the Utilities Act include electricity, water, natural gas distribution, railways (but not the operation of trains), postal services, and telecommunications.

Third government (2020–present)

Æthetansunu ran in 2020 Tretridian federal election on a platform of continuing his "record of good governance" and "keeping the ship of state steady." The ÞSD would gain enough seats to gain a majority in the Witan, allowing it to form a single-party government, the first time any party other than the LDP has done so in more than 50 years.

Irnac War

Following an incident on the border between Durakia and Vakarastan on July 15, 2020, Tretrid publicly declared support for Durakia. They deployed 50,000 soldiers and a naval task force. Several other nations, including Volscina, Norgsveldet, and Meagharia also declared their support for Durakia. The Joint Strategic Command of Anti-Vakari Forces (JSCAVF) was formed between the five nations to coordinate the resultant Irnac War. Tretrid formally declared war on Vakarastan on July 21. It participated in several decisive battles in western Irnac, including the Battle of Kretsburg and the Nov Martovgrad Offensive, and also participated in the JSCAVF occupation of Vakarastan until its integration into Durakia.

Correva

Nuova Volscina was couped by Guerino Correvaci on July 24, 2020, leading to the reorganization of Nuova Volscina into Correva. The next day, Æthelstanesunu publicly recognized Correva as the legal successor to Nuova Volscina and affirmed Tretrid's alliance with the new state. He also condemned Volscina for pushing irredentist claims on the Correvan border in response to the coup, denouncing it as an attack on Correvan sovereignty.

Æthelstanesunu would later publicly condemn the alleged illegal movement of Volscine soldiers across the Correvan border, calling it tantamount to a Volscine invasion of the country, and put Tretridian forces in West Novaris on alert while vowing to "defend Correva from Volscine aggression."

On July 29, 2020, a Correvan frigate was sunk by a submarine spotted flying the Volscine colors. Æthelstanesunu quickly accused Volscina as being behind the attacks and demanded that the League of Novaris take action.

The League's response was to order a referendum on the continued sovereignty of Correva. The referendum in question quickly devolved into political violence that eventually caused the collapse of Correva and the LN occupation of Correva.
