Eoforwine Æthelstanesunu is a Tretridian politician who served as the Prime Minister of Tretrid from 2016 to 2024 and was the leader of the Social Democratic Party of Tretrid from 2013 to 2024. He served as Minister of Finance under the premiership of Osbeorn Cynricesunu. Eoforwine lead Tretrid through a series of conflicts, including the Auroran-Pacific War and the reignition of the Novaran Cold War.
Æthelstanesunu represented the constituency of Æschealf, in Iegburg, Tretrid.
A native to Iegburg, Æthelstanesunu attended university in Cynebury, where he studied economics and political science, eventually getting a master's degree in both fields. After a couple of years in academia, Eoforwine first was elected to the Witenagemot in the 1987 elections. He rose to national prominence with a speech critical of the Novaran Cold War and Tretrid's stance in perpetuating it, while also arguing that Tretrid would stagnate if it became too absorbed into West Novaris.
As a member of the cabinet under the Cynricesunu government, Æthelstanesunu was heavily involved in the government's effort to revitalize an aging welfare system that had been scaled back over two decades and was now largely in a state of disrepair. As part of the cabinet, he supported Cynricesunu's stance of rebuilding West Novaris into a stable, prosperous region, though he would privately express his distrust at the new Volscine government.
Æthelstanesunu was made Leader of the Opposition in 2013 concurrent with his accession to the leadership of the Social Democratic Party, the largest opposition party at the time. He would be an outspoken critic of the Wulfricesunu government, heavily panning it for trying to privatize publicly owned industries while also trying to undo parts of the welfare system. After a number of corruption scandals surrounding Wulfricesunu came to light, and the resulting motion of confidence, Wulfricesunu was ousted and Eoforwine was appointed Prime Minister in his place. His government was reaffirmed in the 2017 Tretridian federal election.
Æthelstanesunu's first years in office was characterized by a "steady hand policy," where he sought to restore public trust in the Tretridian federal government in the wake of the scandals of the Wulfricesunu administration, and also with a significantly more active foreign policy than his recent predecessors. He led Tretrid through the Auroran-Cerenerian War and, along with his Ambassador-at-Large to Novaris Æthelwine Heardesunu, was one of the central figures in the creation of the League of Novaris. Due to his broadly popular policies under his first term, he was easily reelected in the 2020 Tretridian federal election.
After Correvaci's coup in Nuovo Volscina in June 2020, Æthelstanesunu supported the nascent Correva until the state's collapse a few months later, after which he supported the League of Novaris occupation of Correva. Æthelstanesunu's handling of the Correvan Crisis has been heavily criticized for allegedly reigniting the Novaran Cold War. His diplomatic maneuvering in the aftermath of the collapse of Correva resulted in the signature of the Kanor Accords between Tavaris and Meagharia, Tretridian entry in the North Concordian Economic Forum, and the creation of the Tolinsk Accords.
On December 30, 2023, Æthelstanesunu announced his intent not to stand for the 2024 Tretridian federal election and retire from politics. He stepped down as Leader of the ÞSD on January 30, 2024, and was succeeded to the position by Eadmund Waldhergesunu. After the election, he was succeeded by Eahlstan Colasunu as Prime Minister.
