Elected President

TBD

Presidential elections were held on June 16, 2024 in Volkia to elect the President and Vice President of the Volkian Federative Republic. Additionally, the National Assembly was up for election: all 350 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and 26 of the 78 seats in the Federal Council. Elections for some Governors and Vice Governors, Provincial Legislative Assemblies, and other local elections were held at the same time. As no candidate for president or for governor in some provinces received more than half of valid votes in the first round, a runoff election was scheduled for June 30, 2024 for these offices.

Incumbent Yuliya Surkova was unable to run for re-election as she was term limited. Kirill Kovalenko, candidate of the Social Democratic Union, won 37.90% of the vote while Andrei Petrov, the Conservative Party candidate, won 35.84% of the vote. Kovalenko and Petrov will be advancing to the runoff election on June 30.

Electoral system

Date

Volkian law establishes the date of the first round of presidential elections to be held on the third Sunday in June, with a second round scheduled for two weeks later, if required.

Eligibility requirements

The Constitution of Volkia (Chapter IV) defines the conditions that a presidential candidate must satisfy: must be a natural born citizen, be at least 35 years of age, have resided in Volkia for the last 12 years, and the ability to speak the state language. The Constitution also establishes a term limit: one individual cannot serve more than 2 terms total.

Procedure

Candidates can be nominated by a political party that won at least one seat in the National Assembly in the previous elections, or can be nominated by collecting 75,000 signatures from enfranchised citizens from at least half of the nation's provinces with at least 1,500 signatures in each of them. The election results are only considered valid if turnout is above or equal to 35%. The candidate who receives an absolute majority of votes is elected president; if no candidate receives a majority of the votes, a second round between the top 2 candidates is held two weeks after the first round. The candidate with the largest number of votes in the second round then becomes president.
