Pyotr Ilyich Lapunov (Volkian: Петр Ильич Лапунов; born June 21, 1967) is a Volkian jurist who is serving as the Chief Justice of the Volkian Federative Republic. He was nominated by President Yuliya Surkova on January 9, 2023 and was confirmed by the Federal Council on February 14, 2023. He was sworn in the next day on February 15, 2023.
Born and raised in Grachyovka, Kalinibinsk Oblast, he attended Kalinibinsk State University for college and received his JD from Volkgoroda State University's School of Law. He served as an editor for the Volkgoroda Law Review. He began his legal career with two clerkships, including one with now retired Federal Supreme Court Associate Justice Dmitri Gribov. Prior to his appointment to the chief judgeship on the Court of Appeals, he served as a district judge for the Federal District Court for the District of Kalinibinsk from 2008 to 2018.
He is the first openly gay man and first former federal public defender to serve as Chief Justice.
