Born first of three boys in Poltovka, [[Shimanovsk Oblast]], Kovalenko grew up playing ice hockey with his brothers on an outdoor rink built by their father Andrei in Vinnitsa, [[Norindzhik Oblast]]. Their father and all three Kovalenko brothers played in the VHL. Andrei was drafted by the Vladinsk Sharks in 1970, where he played until 1976 when he was selected by the newly founded Kovdor Falcons in the 1976 VHL Expansion Draft. He played in Kovdor until his retirement in 1986. Younger brothers Viktor, drafted by the Makushin Cyclones in 1995, and Yuri, drafted by the Repyovka Ice Wolves in 1999, played in the VHL together. All three brothers played for the Kovdor Falcons in the 2006 season. His cousins, Dmitry and Pavlo Yarovenko, were drafted by Birsk HC in the 1996 VHL Entry Draft.
Kirill eliminated both of his brothers in playoff series: Viktor in the 2008 Eastern Conference Finals and Yuri in Round 2 of the 2009 Polivanov Cup Playoffs. Additionally, Viktor eliminated Kirill in the 2002 Polivanov Cup Finals to win a Polivanov Cup before his older brother. It was the seventh time a pair of brothers faced off against each other in a Finals series. All three brothers have retired from the VHL, with Viktor and Yuri holding coaching jobs. Viktor is the current head coach of HC Kodinsk while Yuri is an assistant coach for the Beryozovka Panthers.
Kovalenko met his wife Irina Solovyova in Vinnitsa around 1996, when she began working for the Falcons' marketing team. The two married in 2000 and have a son, Dominik (born 2004) and a daughter, Anastasiya (born 2007). They live in the Kovdor neighborhood of Voskreka.

Kirill Andreyevich Kovalenko (Volkian: Кирилл Андреевич Коваленко; born November 14, 1974), also known colloquially as "KK", is a Volkian former professional ice hockey player and politician who is the president-elect of Volkia. He has been the mayor of Kovdor since 2016. He played his entire 20-season Volkian Hockey League (VHL) career with the Kovdor Falcons from 1993 to 2013. Kovalenko tallied 312 goals and 712 assists, for 1,024 points, in 1,217 VHL games, ranking him as the Falcons' all-time leading points scorer and one of the league's top points scorers. He captained the Falcons to two Polivanov Cups in 2008 and 2012. He was inducted into the VHL Hockey Hall of Fame in 2016.

He was elected in 2016 and re-elected in 2020. In June 2024 he won the Volkian presidential election with 53.66% of the vote.

Kovalenko was born November 11, 1975 at Makar Demyanenko Memorial Hospital in Poltovka, Shimanovsk Oblast to Andrei Kovalenko (1949–2018) and Ludmila Trofimova (born 1954) but was raised in Vinnitsa, a suburb of Kovdor in Norindzhik Oblast. His father played in the VHL for several teams from 1970 to 1986 while his mother is a retired banker. He has two younger brothers, Viktor and Yuri, who also played professionally in the VHL. Kovalenko began playing organized hockey when he was eight years old. Kovalenko attended high school at Berdichev High School and played on the school's ice hockey team.
