He later served as Chancellor of the Exchequer and Home Secretary under the Gastrell administration between April 1975 and December 1976. On 9 March 1976 he became the Father of the House, succeeding Wilton Bishop and being succeeded by Sir Pevington Burr when he retired from his constituency in March 1977.
