Yor, officially the The Realms Of Yor Isles, is a sovereign island nation in maritime Southwest Aurora. Located off the southern tip of the Asilica Peninsula, bordering the Straits of Sarentria to the North, the Absurdivani Islands to the south, and the Faethalria islands to the east. The country's territory is composed of 4 main island, 48 satellite islands and islets, and four outlying islet, the combined area of which has increased by 32% since the country's independence as a result of extensive land reclamation projects. The country is home to 5..2 million residents. Multiracialism is enshrined in the constitution, and continues to shape national policies in education, housing, and politics.

Although its history stretches back millennia, Modern Yor was founded in 1678 as a captured territory by the Morstabishlian Empire from Ethalria. In 1695, Yor came under the direct control of Morstaybishlian. During the Great War, Yor was occupied by Ethalria but returned to the MBE during the AIW as a separate crown colony upon the Grand Matriarchy of Ethalria’s fragmentation into the Matriarchy of Ethalria and the Republic of Ethalria. In 1978 Yor became Independent. Ideological differences came to boiling point in 2017 sparking the Auroran-Pacific War when South Yor broke away from the York goverment, at the end of the war with the backing of the allies South Yor won and assimilated the rest of Yor to become The Realms of Yor Isles.

After early years of turbulence and despite lacking natural resources and a hinterland, the nation is rapidly developing to become one of the major auroran nations based on external trade, becoming a highly developed country; It is a major financial and shipping hub, Dorchester ranked the one of most expensive city to live in since 2019, and has been identified as a tax haven. Yor is placed highly in key social indicators: education, healthcare, quality of life, personal safety and housing, with a home-ownership rate of 83%.

Yor is a unitary parliamentary republic & is widely regarded to have an incorrupt and meritocratic government, with a fair judiciary and strong rule of law. Yor is also a member of UNAC, World Trade Organization, Northern Shield Treaty Orgnization, and the MBE Commonwealth agremment.

Government & Politics

York Governmental Plaza was opened in 2019 and houses Congress, Senate, and Chambers of Deputies. The Prime Minister and President work from Tower II

Yor Isles has a left-right multi-party system. Following the upcoming 2017 parliamentary election, the biggest parties are the center-right Independence Party, the Left-Green Movement, and the IYorcelandic Pirate Party. Other political parties with seats in are the Progressive Party, the Reform Party, Bright Future and the Social Democratic Alliance. Many other parties exist on the municipal level, most of which run only locally in a single municipality.

Yor is a parliamentary republic. The Constitution of Yor is the supreme law of the country, establishing the structure and responsibility of government. The president is head of state and exercises executive power on the advice of her ministers. The prime minister is head of government and is appointed by the president as the person most likely to command the confidence of a majority of Parliament. Cabinet is chosen by the prime minister and formally appointed by the president.

The government is separated into three branches:

  • Executive: The president is commander-in-chief of the military, can veto laws before they become effective (subject to parliamentary override), and holds limited discretionary powers of oversight over the government. The prime minister and Cabinet are responsible for administering and enforcing laws and policies.
  • Legislative: The unicameral Parliament enacts national law, approves budgets, and provides a check on government policy.
  • Judiciary: The Supreme Court and State Courts, whose judges are appointed by the president, interpret laws and overturn those they find unconstitutional.

The president is directly elected by popular vote for a renewable four-year term. Requirements for this position are extremely stringent, such that no more than several thousand people qualify for candidacy. Presidential elections may be declared "reserved" for a racial community if no one from that ethnic group has been elected to the presidency in the three most recent terms. Only members of that community may qualify as candidates in a reserved presidential election.

The judicial system is based on Morstaybishlian common law, continuing the legal tradition established during Morst rule but with substantial local differences. Criminal law is based on the Kuthern Penal Code originally intended for Nacata. Trial by jury was abolished in 1999, and both caning and capital punishment continue to be administered as penalties for severe offences.

Goverment

Congress meet at the New Governmental Plaza

The president of Yor Isles is a largely ceremonial head of state and serves as a diplomat, but may veto laws voted by the parliament and put them to a national referendum. The current president is Entsky Gotfrid. The head of government is the prime minister who, together with the cabinet, is responsible for the executive government. The cabinet is appointed by the president after a general election to the parliament; however, the appointment is usually negotiated by the leaders of the political parties, who decide among themselves after discussions which parties can form the cabinet and how to distribute its seats, under the condition that it has a majority support in the parliament. Only when the party leaders are unable to reach a conclusion by themselves within a reasonable time span does the president exercise this power and appoint the cabinet personally.

Administrative divisions

Yor is divided into regions, constituencies, and municipalities. The eight regions are primarily used for statistical purposes. District court jurisdictions also use an older version of this division. The constituencies for the parliamentary elections are the current four constituencies:

Dorchester North and Dorchester South (city regions); Southwest (four non-contiguous suburban areas around St.Delanor); Northwest and Northeast (northern half of North Yor, split); and, South (southern half of South Yor, excluding St.Delanor and suburbs).

74 municipalities in Yor govern local matters like schools, transport, and zoning These are the actual second-level subdivisions of Yor Isles, as the constituencies have no relevance except in elections and for statistical purposes. St.Delanor is by far the most populous municipality, about four times more populous than Dorchester, the second one.

Foreign relations

Yor's stated foreign policy priority is maintaining security in Southwest Aurora surrounding territories. An underlying principle is political and economic stability in the region.

As one of the founding members of UNAC, it is a strong supporter of the UNAC as Yor's economy is closely linked to that of the region as a whole. Yor maintains membership in other regional organisations, such as the Forum for Kuthern-Auororan Cooperation. It is also a member of, the Northern Shield Treaty Organization. In general, bilateral relations with other UNAC members are strong; however, disagreements have arisen, and relations with neighboring Sarentria and Faethalria have sometimes been strained.

The first diplomatic contact since independence with the MBE was made in the 1980s, with full diplomatic relations established in the 1991. Since then the two countries have been major players in strengthening the Auroran–York relationship, and has maintained a long-standing and greatly prioritized close relationship partly due to MBE growing influence specifying that "its common interest with the MBE is far greater than any differences". Furthermore, Singapore has positioned itself as a strong supporter of the MBE constructive engagement and peaceful development in the region.

In addition, MBE has been Yors largest trading partner since 2017. Yor and Kuthernburg share a long-standing close relationship, in particular in defense, the economy, health, and education. Yor has also pushed regional counter-terrorism initiatives, with a strong resolve to deal with terrorists inside its borders. To this end, the country has stepped up co-operation with NSTO members and MBE to strengthen regional security and fight terrorism, as well as participating in Yor's first joint maritime exercise with the NSTO. It has also given support to the Kuthern-led coalition to fight terrorism, with bilateral co-operation in counter-terrorism and counter-proliferation initiatives, and joint military exercises.

Geography

Volcanism has been continuous on the York Islands for at least 20 myr, and perhaps even longer. Despite being in a sub-tropical region of the world, it doesn't have the same tropical heat as you would expect. In fact, the York Isles doesn't have a tropical climate, which means you can visit Yor Islands all year round, and enjoy the weather and the unrivalled wildlife. From the York Islands, you can take a York Cruise and view the island's unbelievable creatures only found here, including the famous York tortoise, the York sea lion, and the York batfish. Like its surrounding sub-tropical regions, the York Islands have two seasons. The wet season and the dry season. With the islands located in the Southern Ocean, the seasons are very much dictated by their surrounding currents, causing warmer and cooler spells for the islands. However, the differences in the seasons are most noticeable by the amount of rain, with lots more rainfall frequenting the Galapagos islands in the rainy season, rather than any significant change in the temperature.

The wet season usually takes place from December to May and is largely affected by the hot Auroran currents and the Southeast trade winds. Surprisingly, during this season you will see a lot of sun, and average temperatures of around 26ºC. Despite it being the wet season, the rain leaves as quickly as it arrives, with brief moments of heavy rain gracing the arid islands and disappearing again. Unlike a Rainforest, much of the rain that falls on the York Islands is absorbed by its volcanic soils, and so the effect of the rain can often bring a much warmer climate. For example, the ocean is often warmer during this season, making it great time of year for swimming and snorkeling.

Lasting from June to November the dry season, sees the Sarentria current and Auroran undercurrent bring cooler air to the islands. The air and the ocean are both cooler than during the wet season. Even though it is called the dry season, like a tropical climate, light rain can fall across the islands during this time, particularly in the higher parts of the islands, where surprisingly the islands see more rain than during the wet season. You will find the general weather conditions will be cloudy, cooler, and the sun will be less intense, with average temperatures of around 22ºC. With the water temperature much cooler during the dry season, this season can be a perfect time of year for a cruise. During this season you will discover plenty of sea mammals and land birds on and off the islands.

Land reclamation projects had increased Yors land area 22% since 1989. The country is projected to reclaim another 532 sq mi by 2030. Some projects involve merging smaller islands through land reclamation to form larger, more functional islands, as has been done with Beldton Island. The type of sand used in reclamation is found in rivers and beaches, rather than deserts, and is in great demand worldwide. In 2018 Yor imported almost 21 million tons of sand for its projects, but since 2019 Yor switched to using polders for reclamation, in which an area is enclosed and then pumped dry.

York wildlife

These islands are volcanic in origin and were never attached to any continent. Wildlife arrived here in one of three ways: flying, floating or swimming. The giant Yorknese tortoise is one of the largest land animals on the islands, and due to the very few numbers of natural predators, the wildlife in the Yor is known for being extremely tame without instinctual fear.

Fauna

One of the best-known is the Yorknese tortoise, which lives on several of the islands. It has an average lifespan of more than 190 years.

The marine iguana is also extremely unusual since it is the only iguana adapted to life in the sea. Land iguanas, lava lizards, geckos, and harmless snakes can also be found in the islands. The large number and range of birds is also of interest to scientists and tourists. Around 66 species live in the archipelago, of which 27 are found only in the Yor Isles. Some of these are found only on one island.

The most outstanding are penguins, which live on the colder coasts, Florin finches, frigate birds, albatrosses, gulls, boobies, pelicans and York hawks, among others. The flightless cormorant, a peculiar bird that has lost the ability to fly, and the York crake, nearly flightless, are also part of this rich fauna.

On the other hand, there are many mammal species, mostly sea mammals such as whales, dolphins and sea lions. A few species of endemic York mice the Santiago York mouse and the Fernandina York mouse - have been recently rediscovered. Along with a peculiar set of Red Deer that are derived from the mainland species and have become adept as well to aquatic life, York Devils, Sub-Tropical Wolverines, and Ocelots also inhabit the isles.

Flora

On the larger York Islands, four ecological zones have been defined: coastal, low or dry, transitional and humid. In the first, species such as myrtle, mangrove and saltbush can be found. In the second grow cactus, the incensé tree, carob tree, poison apple tree, chala and yellow cordia, among others. In the transitional zone taller trees, epiphytes and perennial herbs can be seen. The best-known varieties are the cat's claw, espuela de gallo. In the humid sector are the cogojo, York guava, cat's claw, York coffee, passionflower and some types of moss, ferns, and fungus.

Military

South Yor AF & Kuthern AF jets perform joint bombing run in what is now present day Sarentria.

The York Armed Forces (YAF) is the military component of the Ministry of Defence of the Realms of Yor Isles as part of the island's Total Defence strategy.

The YAF has three services: the York Army, the Republic of Yor Air Force (RYAF) and the Republic of Yor Navy (RYN). The YAF protects the interests, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Yor Isles from external threats.

The YAF relies heavily on a large pool of conscripts in the active and reserve forces. It has an approximate active strength of around 67,000 personnel and is capable of mobilizing over a million reservists in case of national exigencies or full-scale war battles. National Servicemen make up more than 80% of its military defense system and form the backbone of the YAF.

After its independence, Yor had four infantry regiments commanded by Kuthern officers. This force was considered too small to provide effective security for the new country, so the development of its military forces became a priority. Kasmiyland pulled its military out of Yor in October 2017, leaving behind only a small Kuthern, Lessau and Latianburg force as a token military presence. The last Kuthern soldier left Yor in March 2018. Lessau troops were the last to leave, in October 2018. A great deal of initial support came from Nacata, the main fears after independence was an invasion by Sarenteria. Nacatan Defense Force (NDF) commanders were tasked with creating the York Armed Forces (YAF) from scratch, and Nacatan instructors were brought in to train York soldiers. Military courses were conducted according to the NSTO format, and Yor adopted a system of conscription and reserve service based on the Nacatan model. Yor still maintains strong security ties with Israel and is one of the biggest buyers of Nacatan arms and weapons systems. The BEHOMA anti-tank weapon is one example of recent York-Nacatan collaboration.

The YAF is being developed to respond to a wide range of issues, in both conventional and unconventional warfare. The York Science and Technology Agency is responsible for procuring resources for the military. The geographic restrictions of Yor mean that the YAF must plan to fully repulse an attack, as they cannot fall back and re-group. The small size of the population has also affected the way the YAF has been designed, with a small active force but a large number of reserves. Yor has conscription for all able-bodied males at age 18, except those with a criminal record or who can prove that their loss would bring hardship to their families. Males who have yet to complete pre-university education or are awarded a scholarship can opt to defer their draft. Though not required to perform military service, the number of women in the YAF has been increasing: since 2018 they have been allowed to fill military vocations formerly reserved for men. Before induction into a specific branch of the armed forces, recruits undergo at least 9 weeks of basic military training.

Because of the scarcity of open land on the main island, training involving activities such as live firing and amphibious warfare are often carried out on smaller islands, typically barred to civilian access. However, large-scale drills are considered too dangerous to be performed in the country and are performed in Kasmiyland. Training is also held in about a dozen other countries. In general, military exercises are held with foreign forces once or twice per week. Due to airspace and land constraints, the Republic of Yor Air Force (RYAF) maintains a number of overseas bases in Kuthernburg, Nacata, and Lessau. The YAF has sent forces to assist in operations outside the country, in areas such as Atiland and Latianburg, in both military and civilian roles. In 2019, the RYN deployed two ships, the RYS Kong and the Dorchester to the Strait of Furnifold to aid in counter piracy efforts as part of NSTO Task Force 83. Yor is part of the Northern Security Treaty Organization, a military alliance with Kasmiyland, Kuthernburg, Duelland, Latianburg, Lessau, and Nacata.

Memorials

Culture

Despite its small size, Yor has a diversity of languages, religions, and cultures. Yor does not fit the traditional description of a nation, calling it a society-in-transition, pointing out the fact that Yorians do not all speak the same language, share the same religion, or have the same customs. Each Yorian behaviors and attitudes are influenced by, among other things, his or her home language and his religion. Yorians who speak Staynish as their native language tend to lean toward Western culture, while those who speak Ethalarian as their native language tend to lean toward Ethalarian culture and Confucianism. York-speaking Yorians tend to lean toward there culture, which itself is closely linked to Islamic culture. Racial and religious harmony is regarded by Yorians as a crucial part of Yor's success, and played a part in building a Yorkian identity.

When Singapore became independent from Ethalaia in 1978, most York citizens were transient laborers who had no intention of staying permanently. There was also a sizable minority of middle-class, locally born people—known as Nadians descendants of 15th and 16th-century Ethalarian immigrants. With the exception of the Duilans who pledged their loyalties to Yor, most of the laborers' loyalties lay with their respective homelands of Ethalaria, Tuvalstan and MBE. After independence, the government began a deliberate process of crafting a York identity and culture. Yor has a reputation as a nanny state. The government also places heavy emphasis on meritocracy, where one is judged based on one's ability.

Economy

Yor has a highly developed market economy, based historically on extended entrepôt trade. Between 1975 and 2005, growth rates averaged around 8 per cent per annum, transforming the living standards of the population. The York economy is regarded as free, innovative, competitive, dynamic and business-friendly. Yor is one of the freest economy in the world and as well as the easiest place to do business for the past decade.

Yor attracts a large amount of foreign investment as a result of its location, skilled workforce, low tax rates, advanced infrastructure and zero-tolerance against corruption. Yor has one of Urths largest foreign reserves, and one of the highest net international investment position per capita. There are more than 8,240 multinational corporations from Kuthernburg, Nacata, and Aurora in Singapore. Despite market freedom, Yors government operations have a significant stake in the economy, contributing 19% of the GDP.

Since the APW, the country has been identified as an increasingly popular tax haven for the wealthy due to the low tax rate on personal income and tax exemptions on foreign-based income and capital gains.

In 2019, Dorchester was rated the world's most expensive city by Kuthern Economist. The government provides numerous assistance programs to the homeless and needy through the Department of Family Resources, so acute poverty is rare. Some of the programs include providing between 350 SHD and 1400 SHD of financial assistance per month to needy households, providing free medical care at government hospitals, and paying for children's tuition. Other benefits include compensation for gym fees to encourage citizens to exercise, up to 38,000 SHD as a baby bonus for each citizen, heavily subsidized healthcare, financial aid for the disabled, the provision of reduced-cost laptops for poor students, rebates for costs such as public transport and utility bills, and more.

Yor has banned cutting of trees , in order to prevent the air from being high in pollution. Crops, that are typically linked to forests' destruction are timber, soy, palm oil and beef. Yor depends totally on Furnifold, Atiland, Kuthernburg and Nacata for the delivery of Crops and other foods.

Industry Sectors

Yor is one of the Urths top foreign exchange centre, top financial centre, top casino gambling market, largest oil-refining and trading centre, largest oil-rig producer and hub for ship repair services, and largest logistics hub. The economy is diversified, with its top contributors being financial services, manufacturing, and oil-refining. Its main exports are refined petroleum, integrated circuits, and computers, which constituted 35% of the country's GDP in 2020. Other significant sectors include electronics, chemicals, mechanical engineering, and biomedical sciences.

Yor's largest companies are in the telecommunications, banking, transportation, and manufacturing sectors, many of which started as state-run statutory corporations but have since been publicly listed on the Dorcheste Exchange.

The nation's best known global companies include Realms Airways, Port Dorchester Airport, and the Realm of Dorchester Port.

Tourism

Tourism is a major industry and contributor to the York economy, attracting 21.2 million international tourists in 2019, more than four times Yor's total population. In 2019 tourism contributed directly to about 7% of Yor's GDP,down from 2016, when tourism contributed, directly and indirectly, to around 12.4% of Yor's GDP. Altogether, the sector generated approximately 10.2% of Yor's employment in 2016. Dip's or stagnation in Yor's Economy in 2017/2018 financial year could be thanks to the Auroran Pacific War which hurt the York economy severly, unsure of when the country could return the economy didn't make any major leaps until the end of 2018.

The Red Road district, which contains multi-storey shopping centres and hotels, can be considered the centre of shopping and tourism in Dorchester. Other popular tourist attractions include the Marineland Dorchester Zoo, River Safari and Night Safari. Marineland Dorchester Zoo has embraced the open zoo concept whereby animals are kept in enclosures, separated from visitors by hidden dry or wet moats, instead of caging the animals, and the River Safari has 411 species of animals, including numerous endangered species. Yor promotes itself as a medical tourism hub, with about 174,000 foreigners seeking medical care there each year.

Infrastructure

As Yor is made up of several island with a high population density, the number of private cars on the road is restricted to curb pollution and congestion. Car buyers must pay for duties one-and-a-half times the vehicle's market value. Car prices are generally significantly higher in Yor than in other Staynish-speaking countries. As with most Commonwealth countries, vehicles on the road and people walking on the streets keep to the right.

Common alternatives to private vehicles include bicycles, bus, taxis and train (MRT or LRT). Two companies run the train transport system DART Transit and BART Corporation. Four companies run the public buses under a 'Bus Contracting Model' where operators bid for routes. There are eight taxi companies, who together put out over 31,200 taxis on the road. Taxis are a popular form of public transport as the fares are relatively cheap compared to many other developed countries.

Yor is a major international transport hub in Aurora, serving some of the busiest sea and air trade routes. Dorchester International Airport is an aviation centre for Southeast Aurora . Dorchester International Airport hosts a network of over 130 airlines connecting Yor to countries and territories worldwide. The national airline is Realms Airlines. The Port of Dorchester, managed by port operators KTI International and Kudong Port, was the second-busiest port in aurora in terms of shipping tonnage handled, at 3.21 billion gross tons (GT), and in terms of containerized traffic, at 41.4 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). In addition, the port is the world's busiest for transshipment traffic and the world's biggest ship refueling center.

Education

Education for primary, secondary, and tertiary levels is mostly supported by the state. All institutions, private and public, must be registered with the Department of Education. Staynish is the language of instruction in all public schools, and all subjects are taught and examined in Staynish except for the "mother tongue" language paper. While the term "mother tongue" in general refers to the first language internationally, in Yor's education system, it is used to refer to the second language, as Staynish is the first language. Students who have been abroad for a while, or who struggle with their "Mother Tongue" language, are allowed to take a simpler syllabus or drop the subject.

Education takes place in three stages: primary, secondary, and pre-university education. Only the primary level is compulsory. Students begin with six years of primary school, which is made up of a four-year foundation course and a two-year orientation stage. The curriculum is focused on the development of Staynish, the mother tongue, mathematics, and science. Secondary school lasts from four to five years, and is divided between Special, Express, Normal (Academic), and Normal (Technical) streams in each school, depending on a student's ability level. The basic coursework breakdown is the same as in the primary level, although classes are much more specialized. Pre-university education takes place over two to three years at senior schools, mostly called Junior Colleges. As alternatives to Pre-U education, however, courses are offered in other post-secondary education institutions, including 5 polytechnics and the Institutes of Technical Education.

Yor is also an education hub, with more than 45,000 international students in 2019.

Healthcare

Yor has a generally efficient healthcare system, even though health expenditures are relatively low for developed countries. In general, Yor has had the lowest infant mortality rates in the world for the past two decades prior to the APW.

The government's healthcare system is based upon the "5GM" framework. This has three components: YorkCare, which provides a safety net for those not able to otherwise afford healthcare, YorkSadi, a compulsory national medical savings account system covering about 85% of the population, and YorkProtection, a government-funded health insurance program. Public hospitals in Yor have a considerable autonomy in their management decisions, and notionally compete for patients, however they remain in government ownership and government appoints their boards and Chief Executive Officers and management reports and is responsible to these boards. In 2020, 28% of healthcare was funded by the government.
