Durin's Energy Pipeline
The (Frakanic: Pipeline d'Énergie de Durin) Durin's Energy Pipeline is a oil and natural gas pipeline that runs from the oil-rich country of Eyjaria in the far west Yastaria to the regional power of Federation in the East. The pipeline passes through three countries: Eyjaria, Helslandr, and the Federation.
Construction of the pipeline as a part of Together Lapérouse! began in late 2018 and was completed in late 2020 just before the outbreak of the Helslandr Civil War. The pipeline stretches over [x] kilometers and has a capacity of 2 million barrels of oil and 6 billion cubic meters of natural gas per day. It is owned and operated by Peninsula Energy Cooperative, a joint venture between the national oil or energy companies of Eyjaria, Helslandr, and the Federation.
The pipeline has been a source of controversy since its inception. Environmental groups have protested the construction of the pipeline, citing concerns over the potential impact on the environment and wildlife. Akuanists in particular had concerns about the pipeline going through several important areas of religious importance. There have been disputes between the three countries over the distribution of revenues from the pipeline, with the Federation pushing for repayment to banks first before distributing the funds where Helslandr is pushing for distribution to the nations first and allow nations to repay the Côtois banks through the nations themselves.
The Côtois government has been accused of using its control over the pipeline to exert political influence over the other two countries. Primary due to the Federation providing the funding for the pipeline and being the primary skilled labor force for building it. For Helslandr government specifically, the Federation provides the financial backing to construct natural gas power plants in the country and much of the infrastructure to use the natural gas.
Despite the controversies and concerns surrounding the pipeline, it remains a vital source of energy for Helslandr. For the Federation, the pipeline is important for several core industries of the Federation, such as plastics, transportation, chemicals and other manufacturing industries. The Federation additionally liquefied the natural gas for exporting to other countries within the RCEU and others.
