The 2021 Joralesian riots were a series of riots that began on 8 March 2021 after Prime Minister Franklin Barvata of Great Morstaybishlia enacted Black Alert as a preventative measure across all of Joralesia following the 2021 Joralesian attacks - the worst terrorist attacks in Joralesian history.

Origin

The terrorist attacks in New Montinay, Swillings and Lurbin, as well as the foiled terror attack in Ewising was the first terrorist attacks in Joralesia in over nine years, and because of its coordination was the deadliest attack its history. This came as a great shock to people living in Joralesia as well as the Morstaybishlian government, who had previously been a driving force in the reduction and eventual capitulation of cartel-based terror incidents and attacks through Joralesia.

A TRIDENT meeting was called less than fifteen minutes after the attacks. People in Joralesia feared that the territory would be shut down, and local media reported on the ongoing meeting in Sani Bursil. When the Black Alert was called, and factoring in the effect it had in the Marislian region of Caltharus after the July 2020 Caltharus attacks, people took to the streets in Ewising first, and then nationwide by the evening via peaceful protest.

Protests

Protests were quite civil in the afternoon when they began in Ewising after 14:00. Protests began in other cities about half an hour later. People gathered in great number which undermined the Black Alert, so police and army units were deployed to break up the congregation. After a 49 year old woman died from a pre-existing heart condition in the protests at around half six in Albany Boulevard, Ewising, protesters associated her death with police brutality.

Riots in Ewising especially became increasingly violent, though other cities had separate instances of violence. Protesters targeted police with objects such as rubble, glass bottles and metal objects. Police numbers tenfold and violent protests ensued throughout the first night.

The police responded to the violence with force, and used batons, pepper spray and tear gas to subdue the crowd. Whilst tear gas is not illegal against protesters, its use was seen as hugely controversial among anti-Black Alert protesters and only fueled the protests.

Police made over seven hundred arrests in the first 24 hours.
