The Witenagemot, also referred to via synecdoche as the Witan, is the supreme legislative body of Tretrid. It has existed in various forms and fulfilled many roles until its codification into its current form in 1804 with the promulgation of the Charter of Privileges. It is a unicameral legislature, though it had been a bicameral legislature up until the merger of the two legislative houses in 1957 by constitutional amendment. The Witenagemot consists of 497 voting members, known as councilors (wita), elected every at most five (typically four) years. The Witan also de jure has a handful of non-voting members that strictly play a ceremonial role.
