The East Cerdan mark officially called the Deutsche Mark is the official currency of the Cerdani Democratic Republic (East Cerdani). It is commonly called the Mark der DDR (Mark of the CDR) outside of East Cerdani and is often used internationally to distinguish it from it's West Cerdan counterpart. The mark (M) is divided into 100 Pfennig (pf).
History
First mark
The first Deutsche Mark(DM) replaced the former Cerdani Empire mark at par on 28 June 1924 as it's legal successor. It was divided into 100 Pfennigs. The initial Deutsche Mark underwent severe inflation until it was curtailed in early 1930s and remained stable afterwards. The currency remained largely unchanged until new banknote designs and coins were introduced in 1953.
Second mark
On October 21 1979, East Cerdani revaluated the mark. The currency code was also changed to DDM. New coins and banknotes were introduced on February 1, 1980, and the transitional period during which both old and new marks could be used lasted until December 31, 1981. During the conversion, the new currency was locally abbreviated as DDM, but has since largely returned to DM while DDM is retained for international use.
Old marks were redeemed by the Bank of Cerdani for a period of six years, until December 31, 1986 at which point they were no longer valid.
Coins
Since February 1, 1980, coins are issued in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 pfennig and 1, 2, marks.
