The Federal Republic of Wolfen, or Wolfen for short, is a unitary parliamentary republic located in Arcturia, neighboring Lokania and New Calth. Its Gross Domestic Product is currently $200 billion and has a population of 15 million. Formerly a colony/protectorate of the Xagrurgian Republic, it gained independence from Xagrurg in 1821 but kept friendly ties with each other. The man who led the independence movement was called Johannes Nixberg, was also the first Chancellor of the fledgling nation. It has several large diamond and silver mines, resulting in a reasonably wealthy nation until the 1930’s when the Great Depression crashed its markets. It switched over to a post-industrial economy by the 1970’s and fought alongside the Morstaybishlian Empire and Xagrurg in the Auroran Imperial War and was supported by Xagrurg in its civil conflict in the 1990’s against Islamic terrorists. However, relations were strained when Xagrurg went through a military coup and became involved in the Aurora-Pacific War, in which Assowolf remained neutral in. However, after the first democratic elections in Xagrurg after the APW, diplomatic relations were resumed with a mutual embassy exchange, nonaggression pact, and free trade agreement, albeit warily.

History

Beginnings of Wolfen to The End of The 19th Century

Assowolf and its people, since its independence in 1845 from its colonial master, the Xagrurgian Republic, has always had dreams of becoming an imperial power like their neighbors west of them on Aurora and becoming a power to be reckoned with. Unfortunately, the Xagrurgians had reversed their “peaceful policy” of trading and interacting with the natives in the 1500’s in favor of a more aggressive policy of expansion and looting, which angered the inhabitants of the lands. In an ironic twist of fate in the 1810’s, the Xagrurgians were dragged into an overseas conflict in another continent, far away from Acturia, resulting in them having to pull some forces out of the Assowolfian colony and across the seas. They immediately took advantage of this pull-out and began demanding self-rule and determination. Xagrurg, paralyzed between the war and their colony, were forced to accept some of their reforms as the Assowolfian National Congress was created and the Government of Assowolf Act was passed, allowing the creation of a self-governing state. They were still not satisfied however, and demanded actual independence. With the support of Assowolfian military veterans and educated clergy, aristocrats and artisans backing the independence movement, this came to fruition with the granting of independence in 1845. Many of the former colonials celebrated their newfound freedoms, though the path to power would be a long and difficult one. The strenuous colonial policy on their lands was less-than-kind and a lot of resources were taken and a lot of the native inhabitants were displaced, but they still had a positive factor going for the fledgling nation; during the time of their colonial subjugation, Xagrurgian businessmen and the republic heavily invested into Assowolf, with many schools, roads, administrators, and factories set up. The first chancellor of Assowolf, Johannes Nixberg, proceeded to take an assertive role in setting the foundations of his new nation, starting the Takneyian Reforms which involved: sending students and people overseas to receive a foreign education and observe their systems of governments and cultures, most notably Xagrurg and other republics; subsidizing the creation of railroads and industrialization; creating a constitutional government and remove the powerful aristocratic factions; and creating a national sense of pride for Assowolf and modernize their military. They were largely successful, making Assowolf a regional powerhouse by the 1870’s and gaining the respect of their neighbors and even some Auroran nations. Confident in their strength, they sent settlers northwards with the mission of civilizing the inhabitants of the north and bringing glory to the Assowolfian Republic.

Lore

Pre-1000’s, they were a sort of regional empire in the region, serving as the equivalent of an Incan or Mayan Empire (don’t kill me pls, they’re just examples to compare to); afterwards though, they collapsed to unknown causes (to be determined later in future RPs). Between the 1000’s and 1400’s, they were splintered into several small tribes and factions, competing over resources, power, etcetera. When Xagrurg proceeded to colonize Arcturia, particularly the eastern coast of present-day Assowolf, the “relatively” peaceful policy to the natives allowed slow but stable (and somewhat prosperous growth) to the natives and the Xagrurgian colony. It gradually grew to encompass where most of Assowolf is now in the present-day, the tribes integrating into the Xagrurgian royal colony to either diplomatic treaties or surrendered their sovereignty and resources in exchange for Xagrurgian protection (as the Morstablysian Empire wasn’t particularly nice to others during their colonization periods). Assowolf became quite prosperous during this time between the 1400’s and 1500’s, sitting in South Arcturia where many ships traveled and occasionally made stops at the capital city in Port Kharough or travelled through the river system in the country to reach the other side of the country to travel to Aurora. There was a brief stint with authoritative rule in the colony oddly enough, where the Xagrurgians ordered the colonial authorities to extract more resources and goods from the local area by all means necessary. This was extremely unpopular and later Xagrurgian and Assowolfian authorities repealed any laws or policies that did so. Assowolf gradually and slowly fell out of importance on the world scale as more and more people travelled through the strait in North Arcturia until the 1820’s, where Assowolfian colonials, educated by Auroran philosophies and educators, particularly from Xagrurgian texts that supported liberalism, liberty, and fraternity, began to demand independence through peaceful means. Xagrurg, in a decline of importance as well, had no choice to accept their demands, lacking the economy to fund a full-scale surpression of an insurrection. Assowolf, newly liberated from their colonial shackles, embarked on several initiatives to strengthen their nation, sending people out of the country to visit other nations and continents to learn how to better themselves and hopefully bring their ideas with them, the initiatives providing high rewards in the end, Assowolf becoming a regional power once again by the end of the century, relatively industrialized and educated from the days of Xagrurgian rule. In the early 20th century, ironically the Assowolfian government themselves went on an imperialist expansion north of them along the coast, in an attempt to gain more resources and potential port cities, taking out any resisting tribes in the process. This was also successful, gaining some swaths of land, but not without some criticisms, mainly from the clergy and socialist organizations about the abuse of Vulpine tribals by government forces. Assowolf’s imperialist dreams gradually slowed down and became content with itself, consolidating their holdings by the 1930’s. Assowolf continued to have friendly ties with its former owner, Xagrurg, and to some extent, other Auroran nations and Arcturian nations. In 1903, the by-then Chancellor of Assowolf, Johan Limburke, drafted a document named the Limbruke Doctrine, describing Wolfen as a “protector” of Arcturian nations from foreign forces, though its effectiveness at doing so is hotly debated in universities by scholars and academics to this date.

Politics

Military

‘’’Nuclear Weapons’’’ Wolfen’s relationship with nuclear weapons is special. Being a historically close strategic military ally to Xagrurg, the two nations have traditionally been close in military and economic cooperation. This would even extend to shared nuclear research, civilian and military, leading to the first nuclear tests done in Assowolf in 1955. Both Assowolf and Xagrurg would maintain a “special relationship” in nuclear cooperation, the two of them sharing nuclear-related technologies and cooperating in their development. Xagrurg being still a major world player (and ally) in the mid-late 20th century and Assowolf’s own strategic importance in the region, the Assowolfian government would allow the deployment of Xagrurgian nuclear weapons in the nation. Following the introduction and deployment of the Xagrurgian M81-L inter-continental ballistic missile in 1970, the Assowolfian government would receive 25 of the missiles stationed in their borders as their military alliance, leading to a degree of protests albeit not too much. After the 1990s, the Assowolf government would successfully acquire 55 M81 ICBMs from Xagrurg after intense negotiations, becoming a nuclear power. However, due to fiscal concerns from the Assowolf government and people, the M81 platform of missiles in Assowolf have not recieved modernization, though tentative plans are being made to modernize a minimum of 30 of the missiles by 2028. As of October 2019, the special relationship is still maintained, though there are a few that protest cooperation with a “imperialist warmonger”. Nevertheless, diplomatic and military relations are still cordial between the two and nuclear cooperation is still active.

Economy

The type of economy Assowolf uses is a mixed economy, with some state enterprises involved in the free market. There are regulations and policies enacted in order to protect the Malagi River that cuts across Assowolf which is key to several towns and cities that relies on the river for water and internal commerce. One of the most prominent corporations in Assowolf is Assowolfian Weapons System. The economy of Assowolf is post-industrial, though diamond and silver mining does comprise a good portion of the Assowolfian income. However, computer-related occupations have been growing in importance and numbers over time. Another prominent corporation is Daosh, a major telecommunications manufacturer based in Port Kharough.
