The increased autonomy in the colonies bolstered independence movements, and calls to make Northrenpynt fully independent from Tretrid slowly grew. As a result, a referendum was held in 1980, and Northrenpynt voted to become independent from Tretrid. Talks ensued, and the request for Northrenpynt independence was granted in March of 1981.

Early 21st Century
Tretrid joined the South-East Pacific Coalition in December of 2016, just as tensions between the SEPC and the Fire Pact Alliance ramped up due to allegations of human rights violations on the part of the FPA. As a result of this, war broke out on December 11 after SEPC ships started to blockade Celannica, an FPA member.

Wulfricson's government was eventually revealed to be highly corrupt and more focused on enriching the cabinet ministers than actually governing the country. The scandal would implicate companies in several other countries, including Volscina, the Union of Free Cities, Lapinumbia, and Nuova Volscina. The most damning evidence turned out to be a Cynebury Herald article comprehensively documenting systematic bribery and embezzlement within the goverment. After Wulfricson refused to resign, the Witan removed his government through a vote of no confidence in December 2016. Snap elections were instituted, but to keep the instruments of state operating, the Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the SDÞ Eoforwine Æthelstanson agreed to form a caretaker government in coalition with the ADÞ and the MWP. The LDP was purposely left out of this new arrangement.
Asendavia, a member of the Fire Pact, sent a fleet to Novaris to attack Tretrid. What resulted were a series of naval engagements off the coast of Tretrid with no decisive outcome.

The snap elections concluded in mid-January 2017, leading Æthelstanson's SDÞ to form a government with the ADÞ. The new Prime Minister swiftly instuted sweeping corruption probes into the LDP and companies implicated in the scandal. Several leading figures in the LDP ended up convicted for various corruption charges, including Wulfricson himself.
Tretrid attempted to disable the Fire Pact's orbital weapons platform and space station, the Eternal Wrath, with an ASAT weapon. In response, the Eternal Wrath fired upon and destroyed the SEPC's space station, Myriad Station. The debris from these events are agreed to have been what caused the ablation cascade that ensued shortly after, making much of space near Urth useless. As a result of this, powers like the Veridian Union intervened, threatening diplomatic sanctions against SEPC and FPA nations, unless peace talks ensued. Due to this, a ceasefire was signed and came into effect on December 14.

Æthelstanson also started to re-evaluate Tretrid's global position, which had grown precarious from years of neglect. Under the early months of his government, Æthelstanson would start engaging Volscina, Aponivia, Kuthernburg, and Nacata more actively.
The Treaty of Aura was signed on January 31, 2017. All nations involved had to pay reparations, but especially Tretrid, since it was the nation that fired the ASAT weapon in the first place.

On Feburary 2, the Witenagemot voted on a motion of confidence due to the government's conduct in the war. As a result, Prime Minister Æthelred was forced to resign, and was so replaced by Eoforwine.-->

Auroran-Pacific War
Main article: Auroran-Pacific War

In 2017, the Republic of Ethalria was seized in a military coup lead by General Erwina Pipenz, who declared the formation of the Empire of Uspalria in the stead of the Ethalrian republic, with most of the army supporting her. The government, including President Ositha Boracova, was forced to flee into exile in Sani Bursil. The Ethalrian Matriarchy was swift in recognizing Uspalria and started to secure an alliance with the nacent state.
In late May of 2017, King Lambertus VII of Great Morstaybishlia held an emergency meeting, in which Tretrid reaffirmed its alliance with the empire. The Oan Isles, Axdel, Kuthernburg, and Stratarin also allied with Great Morstaybishlia. However, during this meeting, Mikhail Starikov took power in Stratarin, leaving the previous Strataric Premier, Viktor Drugov, stuck in Sani Bursil. Starikov renounced Stratarin's allegiance with what came to be known as the "Allies". This event is considered to be the start of the Auroran-Pacific War.

In response, Great Morstaybishlia called a summit of several Auroran nations, along with delegations from Tretrid and Vistaraland, to meet in Sani Bursil to discuss the developing crisis crisis. During the meeting, Stratarin was couped by Mikhail Starikov. While in the Sani Bursil summit, Great Morstaybishlia, the Oan Isles, Vistaraland, Axdel, and Tretrid agreed to work towards restoring Boracova's government in exile, in a seperate meeting, Ethalria, Uspalria, Kostromastan, Gemica, and Stratarin formed an alliance called the Rivendale Pact. After returning to Tretrid from Sani Bursil, Prime Minister Æthelstanson swiftly published a statement condemning Ethalria and Uspalria for destabilizing Aurora and "endangering the lives of civilians by toying with war."
After this meeting, the SEPC Security Council, of which Tretrid was a part, held a meeting concerning these new developments. However, any attempts to make SEPC align with the Allies were stonewalled by Stratarin, as Starikov's government made it clear that they had no interest in aligning with the Allies. Stratarin would later ally with Ethalria, splitting the once mighty Coalition into two.

War broke out swiftly after that, as the Bursil Alliance formed in the summit fought with the Rivendale Pact. Tretrid would significantly boster the Third Fleet, its fleet in the Pacific and in the Morstaybishlian Sea, as it ended up bearing the brunt of the conflict. Tretrid would ultimately contribute a significant amount of forces to the Pacific theater of the war, helping to combat Strataric forces and nearly having invaded Stratarin itself had the country not surrendered.
After Ethalrian agents attempted to assassinate Lambertus, instead killing the Morstaybishlian Crown Prince Thadeus, Tretrid declared war on Ethalria, citing both Thadeus's death and Tretrid's alliance with Great Morstaybishlia.

In the war, Tretrid sent soldiers to Aurora to aid in the war effort, but most of Tretrid's effort was focused on the Pacific Theater, where Tretrid and the Oan Isles opposed Stratarin's attempt to invade Aurora.

Post-Auroran Pacific War
The SDÞ-ADÞ coalition would break apart in late 2017 when Æthelstanson began outreach to Meagharia, which was fresh out of civil war. The government's decision triggered a mass resignation of ADÞ ministers in government. Æthelstanson ended up forming a coalition with the MWP instead to keep himself in government. Tretrid started sending aid to Meagharia and even worked to secure an alliance with the state, something that ended up massively alienating the nominally friendly Norgsveldet.

In June 2020, when Rodenia supported a coup d'etat in the neighboring country of Puntalia, the UCA and the NSTO acted immediately, deploying forces in Puntalia. Tretrid worked with the NSTO in deploying forces, including 30,000 Tretridian soldiers and a naval task force that included an aircraft carrier. Tretrid also successfully petitioned the League of Novaris to condemn Rodenia. However, the seemingly inevitable war was halted when Great Morstaybishlia's Prime Minister, Franklin Barvata, threatened both sides in the crisis with sanctions unless they would sit down and talk. Tretrid was one of the signatories of the Puntalian Compromise Treaty, as it would become known.

The two nations likely would have come to blows as a result of brinkmanship had the League of Novaris not interceded. The LN ordered that Karolingia hold a referendum to determine its future. However, heavy election interference delegitimized the results, and Karling's harsh crackdown on protests only escalated instability further. Ultimately, Karling was forced to flee to Gräntierik, and Karolingia collapsed. The LN authorized the occupation of the formerly Karolingian lands, which was once again named Ostarkeland.

Around this time, the Witenagemot passed the Resolution Concerning Schlesia, which formally ended the Occupation of Schlesia. Prime Minister Eoforwine Æthelstanson immediately approached George Gray, the last president of the Arkian Confederation, and he agreed to head the new Schlesian state.

The Karolingian crisis had shown how unexpectedly delicate Tretrid's position was, and EoforwineÆthelstanson immediately started re-examining his foreign policy. Among other things, he largely ended the Tretridian investment in Meagharian infrastructure, and he had Tretrid join the North Concordian Economic Forum. This diplomatic maneuvering resulted in the creation of the Tolinsk Accords. Another result of this diplomacy was his concerted efforts to bring Meagharia and Tavaris to the negotiating table.

Tretrid was also extending its feelers into Arcturia around this time, having publicly supported the Alksearian King Eldras VI in a power struggle against nobles who opposed the democratization of Alksearia. When Eldras was murdered on live television on October 16, Tretrid was one of the many nations to declare war on Balistria. In the resulting war, Tretrid soon came under heavy criticism for its use of incendiary weapons, especially white phosphorus munitions, and was even accused of attempting to carpet bomb industrial targets with no regard to civilian casualties.

EoforwineÆthelstanson's efforts in getting Tavaris and Meagharia to talk eventually succeeded. On Feburary 19, Tavari and Meagharian officials met in Suþrimaburg, Tretrid, to settle their issues, with Eoforwine mediating. The resultant Kanor Accords brought about the normalization of Tavari–Meagharian relations, where Meagharia gave up its claims to Kanor while both parties agreed to have an independent, LN-sponsored tribune to prosecute Rodokan whalers fishing in Meagharian waters.
