Local protests began in Ewising before quickly spreading regionwide and to over 31 cities and towns. Polls in April 2021 estimated that between 750,000 and 1.2 million people had participated at some point in the demonstrations, making the protests the fourth largest in Joralesian history.
While the majority of protests have been peaceful, demonstrations in some cities escalated into riots, looting, and street skirmishes with police and counter-protesters. Some police responded to protests with instances of notable violence, including against reporters. 5 cities had imposed curfews by April 2021. The deployment of the armed forces has seen the third biggest military operation in Joralesian peacetime. By the end of March, at least 1,500 people had been arrested. In two polls by the MBC and STV, 85.4 and 86.1 percent of 754 individual protests did not result in property damage or injury, but it is estimated that arson, vandalism, and looting between 8 March and 5 April were tabulated to have caused ♅200-300 in insured damages regionally—the second highest recorded damage from civil disorder in Joralesian history.
