For millennia, Ethalria (formerly Ethalried), under the rule of Kings, dominated the Auroran continent alongside Salovia, until 1150 where tensions in the Valerian province hit breaking point. A rebellion led to the eventual border change from completely dominating the northern region of Aurora to having almost no influence 200 years later. If a rebellion had never formed, Ethalria would have likely been the worlds largest colonial superpower today. In 1152, the ruling King Haligar IV was executed in favour for Queen Adalia I. Since 1152, except for one instance in 1493, Ethalria has remained in hereditary rule by a female, under the title Queen until 1826 where the title Matriarch was adopted. In 1975, the post-war recession crippled Ethalria into two states; the Grand Republic of Ethalria and the Matriarchy of Ethalria. The Grand Republic chose to hold on to the monarchy of Ethalria but the matriarchy did not.

==Etymology==

The Old Ethalrian word ''Ethal'', which is the name for the Ethal peoples, derived as a human form of the old elven name Ætal. The word Ethalria derives from the Old Ethalrian word ''Ethalried'', which literally translates to "''Marshes of the Ethals''". In the first millennia CE it is believed that the Valerians referred to the land as ''Ethalria''.
