Royal assent is a practice in monarchies whereby the monarch recognises a bill passed by their countries legislature as an act of the realm. This normally constitutes the last step in the promulgation of laws. In some countries, this step is largely symbolic while in others the monarch has real discretion in exercising this power and can veto laws through it. Some nations allow their sovereign to veto laws by withholding royal assent but they give their legislatures the power to override it. Republics have similar concepts which might be known by terms such as presidential assent.
