The Royal Acronian Armed Forces is the military force of the Acronian Empire, consisting of the Royal Acronian Army, the Royal Acronian Navy, the Royal Acronian Air Force, and the Royal Acronian Marshals.
All citizens, male and female, are required to serve a total of 36 months in the Acronian military, except those in the clergy. After serving 18 months in fully-active service, citizens enter into what is called statutorily "active reserve status" for another 18 months. These people continue semi-regular training exercises and are eligible to be called upon in the event of a crisis.
Citizens are fully released after three years, except in the event of war. In times of national invasion, all able-bodied citizens aged 30 and under are called back into active reserve status and immediately begin training; reserves are drawn from as needed to defend the country. After their mandatory service, individuals who wish to remain involved in the military but not in active duty can choose to voluntarily remain in reserve status. Voluntary membership in the reserves is referred to as "non-active reserve status," and the number of people in this status is not capped.
In 2020, the Acronian Empire budgeted to spend the equivalent of SH$63,454,528,187 on the Royal Acronian Armed Forces, or approximately 3.5% of GDP. Of this, SH$8 billion was allocated to the Royal Acronian Marshals, leaving SH$55,454,528,187 (or 3.1% of GDP) for the remaining sectors of the Armed Forces.
The Empire counts 2,556,880 people in "active duty," however, the Acronian definition of active duty includes members of the Royal Acronian Marshals, including the national police, border guard, and coast guard, as well as conscripted citizens serving their 18-month "active reserve" period, all of which are not normally counted among global militaries as active duty. Excluding these individuals, in 2020 the total number of active-duty personnel was 1,054,397. The counts below do not include civilian administrative staff in any of the departments.
