The president of Cappedore (POTUR) is the head of state of the United Republic of Cappedore. The president directs the executive branch of the united government and is the commander-in-chief of the Cappedorite Loyal Armed Forces and the Cappedorite Sovereign Defence Force.
The President (currently Austin T. Merrill since 2014) is seen as the most important and the most influential political figure in the United Republic. Since the office's creation on December 17th, 1814, its power has substantially decreased, but its relevancy and its significance have remained all too important and recognisable. The president also appoints the Chancellor of Cappedore, the head of government, and governs alongside the Vice President.
History and development
Origins
In August 1813, with the Cappedorite Republican Revolution coming to an end, 5 Cappedorite states declared themselves independent from the British archduchy. They announced themselves as independent, sovereign states, free from the clutches of British rule. Recognizing the necessity of closely coordinating their efforts against the British, the Provisional Government of the Union simultaneously began the process of drafting a constitution that would bind the states together. There were long debates on a number of issues, including representation and voting, and the exact powers to be given the central government. The provisional government finished work on the Articles of the Republic to establish a perpetual union between the states in November 1814 and sent it to the states for ratification, where the United Republic of Cappedore was formed on 16 December 1814.
During this time, elections had been taking place upon the constitution's ratification in November 1814 to elect the first President of Cappedore. Unlike the current system, however, where candidates are put forward by political parties, 2 candidates were put forward by each state to Absolution as 'Delegates' to stand as candidates for President and Vice President respectively. The 1814 election would see the election of Franklin Fulton, and his running mate James Goodward, from Elysium, as first President and Vice President of the United Republic.
