One of the best-known is the Yorknese tortoise, which lives on several of the islands. It has an average lifespan of more than 190 years.

The marine iguana is also extremely unusual since it is the only iguana adapted to life in the sea. Land iguanas, lava lizards, geckos, and harmless snakes can also be found in the islands. The large number and range of birds is also of interest to scientists and tourists. Around 66 species live in the archipelago, of which 27 are found only in the GalápagosYor Isles. Some of these are found only on one island.

The most outstanding are penguins, which live on the colder coasts, Darwin'sFlorin finches, frigatebirdsfrigate birds, albatrosses, gulls, boobies, pelicans and York hawks, among others. The flightless cormorant, a peculiar bird that has lost the ability to fly, and the York crake, nearly flightless, are also part of this rich fauna.

On the other hand, there are many mammal species, mostly sea mammals such as whales, dolphins and sea lions. A few species of endemic York mice the Santiago York mouse and the Fernandina York mouse - have been recently rediscovered. Along with a peculiar set of Red Deer that are derived from the mainland species and have become adept as well to aquatic life, York Devils, Sub-Tropical Wolverines, and Ocelots also inhabit the isles.

=== '''Flora''' ===
On the larger York Islands, four ecological zones have been defined: coastal, low or dry, transitional and humid. In the first, species such as myrtle, mangrove and saltbush can be found. In the second grow cactus, the incensé tree, carob tree, poison apple tree, chala and yellow cordia, among others. In the transitional zone taller trees, epiphytes and perennial herbs can be seen. The best-known varieties are the cat's claw, espuela de gallo. In the humid sector are the cogojo, GalapagosYork guava, cat's claw, GalapagosYork coffee, passionflower and some types of moss, ferns, and fungus.

== Culture ==
Despite its small size, Yor has a diversity of languages, religions, and cultures. Yor does not fit the traditional description of a nation, calling it a society-in-transition, pointing out the fact that Yorians do not all speak the same language, share the same religion, or have the same customs. Each Yorian behaviors and attitudes are influenced by, among other things, his or her home language and his religion. Yorians who speak Staynish as their native language tend to lean toward Western culture, while those who speak Ethalarian as their native language tend to lean toward Ethalarian culture and Confucianism. York-speaking Yorians tend to lean toward there culture, which itself is closely linked to Islamic culture. Racial and religious harmony is regarded by Yorians as a crucial part of Yor's success, and played a part in building a Yorkian identity.

When Singapore became independent from Ethalaia in 1978, most York citizens were transient laborers who had no intention of staying permanently. There was also a sizable minority of middle-class, locally born people—known as Nadians descendants of 15th and 16th-century Ethalarian immigrants. With the exception of the Duilans who pledged their loyalties to Yor, most of the laborers' loyalties lay with their respective homelands of Ethalaria, Tuvalstan and MBE. After independence, the government began a deliberate process of crafting a York identity and culture. Yor has a reputation as a nanny state. The government also places heavy emphasis on meritocracy, where one is judged based on one's ability.

Yor's largest companies are in the telecommunications, banking, transportation, and manufacturing sectors, many of which started as state-run statutory corporations but have since been publicly listed on the Dorcheste Exchange.

The nation's best known global companies include Realms Airways, Port Dorchester Airport, and the Realm of Dorchester Port, all of which are among the most-awarded in their respective fields.

== Infrastructure ==
As Yor is made up of several island with a high population density, the number of private cars on the road is restricted to curb pollution and congestion. Car buyers must pay for duties one-and-a-half times the vehicle's market value. Car prices are generally significantly higher in Yor than in other Staynish-speaking countries. As with most Commonwealth countries, vehicles on the road and people walking on the streets keep to the right.

Common alternatives to private vehicles include bicycles, bus, taxis and train (MRT or LRT). Two companies run the train transport system DART Transit and BART Corporation. Four companies run the public buses under a 'Bus Contracting Model' where operators bid for routes. There are eight taxi companies, who together put out over 31,200 taxis on the road. Taxis are a popular form of public transport as the fares are relatively cheap compared to many other developed countries.

Yor is a major international transport hub in Aurora, serving some of the busiest sea and air trade routes. Dorchester International Airport is an aviation centre for Southeast Aurora . Dorchester International Airport hosts a network of over 130 airlines connecting Yor to countries and territories worldwide. The national airline is Realms Airlines. The Port of Dorchester, managed by port operators KTI International and Kudong Port, was the second-busiest port in aurora in terms of shipping tonnage handled, at 3.21 billion gross tons (GT), and in terms of containerized traffic, at 41.4 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). In addition, the port is the world's busiest for transshipment traffic and the world's biggest ship refueling center.

== Education ==
Education for primary, secondary, and tertiary levels is mostly supported by the state. All institutions, private and public, must be registered with the Department of Education. Staynish is the language of instruction in all public schools, and all subjects are taught and examined in Staynish except for the "mother tongue" language paper. While the term "mother tongue" in general refers to the first language internationally, in Yor's education system, it is used to refer to the second language, as Staynish is the first language. Students who have been abroad for a while, or who struggle with their "Mother Tongue" language, are allowed to take a simpler syllabus or drop the subject.

Education takes place in three stages: primary, secondary, and pre-university education. Only the primary level is compulsory. Students begin with six years of primary school, which is made up of a four-year foundation course and a two-year orientation stage. The curriculum is focused on the development of Staynish, the mother tongue, mathematics, and science. Secondary school lasts from four to five years, and is divided between Special, Express, Normal (Academic), and Normal (Technical) streams in each school, depending on a student's ability level. The basic coursework breakdown is the same as in the primary level, although classes are much more specialized. Pre-university education takes place over two to three years at senior schools, mostly called Junior Colleges. As alternatives to Pre-U education, however, courses are offered in other post-secondary education institutions, including 5 polytechnics and the Institutes of Technical Education.

Yor is also an education hub, with more than 45,000 international students in 2019.

== Healthcare ==
Yor has a generally efficient healthcare system, even though health expenditures are relatively low for developed countries. In general, Yor has had the lowest infant mortality rates in the world for the past two decades prior to the APW.

The government's healthcare system is based upon the "5GM" framework. This has three components: YorkCare, which provides a safety net for those not able to otherwise afford healthcare, YorkSadi, a compulsory national medical savings account system covering about 85% of the population, and YorkProtection, a government-funded health insurance program. Public hospitals in Yor have a considerable autonomy in their management decisions, and notionally compete for patients, however they remain in government ownership and government appoints their boards and Chief Executive Officers and management reports and is responsible to these boards. In 2020, 28% of healthcare was funded by the government.
