The Veridian Union Marines (VUM) is a branch of the Veridian Union Armed Forces responsible for providing power projection, using the mobility of the Veridian Union Navy, by Commissional mandate, to deliver rapidly, combined-arms task forces on land, at sea, and in the air. The V.U. Marines are one of the two armed service branches in the V.U. Military Affairs Administration (MAA). The current President of the Military Council, the highest-ranking military officer in the V.U. armed forces is a Marine general.

The Marines has been a component of the Department of the Navy since 30 June 1834, working closely with naval forces for training, transportation, and logistics. The VUM operates posts on land and aboard sea-going amphibious warfare ships around the world.

Two battalions of Colonial Marines were formed on 1 November 1834 in DuVall as a service branch of infantry troops capable of fighting for independence both at sea and on shore. The role of the Marines has since grown and evolved, expanding to aerial warfare and earning popular titles such as, "The Union's Land Army".

Organization

Marine Expeditionary Force

A Marine expeditionary force (MEF) is the largest type of a Marine-Navy air-ground task force. A MEF is the largest building block of Veridian Union Marines' combat power. A MEF is larger than a Marine expeditionary unit (MEU) or Marine expeditionary brigade (MEB).

Each MEF consists of a MEF Headquarters Group (HQG) as the command element, a Marine Division (MDIV) as the ground combat element, a Navy aircraft wing (NAW) as the aviation combat element, and a Marine logistics group (LG) as the logistics combat element. A MEF also contains a Special Operations Training Group (SOTG) and is the training section component for the MEU and MEB. The SOTG oversees the training and evaluation exercises for the MEU's annual Special Operations Capable Certification.

Marine Expeditionary Brigade

A Marine expeditionary brigade (MEB) is a formation of the Veridian Union Marines, a Marine-Navy air-ground task force of approximately 14,500 marines and sailors constructed around a reinforced infantry regiment, a composite Navy aircraft group, a combat logistics regiment and a MEB command group. The MEB, commanded by a general officer (usually a brigadier general), is task-organized to meet the requirements of a specific situation. It can function as part of an international joint task force, as the lead echelon of the Marine expeditionary force (MEF), or alone. It varies in size and composition and is larger than a Marine expeditionary unit (MEU) but smaller than a MEF. The MEB is capable of conducting missions across the full range of military operations.

Marine Expeditionary Unit

The MEU is unique in that its air and ground combat elements are combined with a logistics combat element under one commander; other services do not unite the command of air and ground forces until much higher command levels.

When foreign military branches unite between Army/Air Force, it typically is at the theater or corps level, with a general commanding, while at the division level it will integrate with army aviation, which can be organized as organic at the battalion level.

The MEU's ground combat element also combines artillery, light armor, and tanks at a much lower level than common.

This joint air-ground task force concept is designed to thoroughly exploit the combat power inherent in air and ground assets by closely integrating them into a single force. The MEU brings all the supplies and logistical support it needs to sustain itself for quick mission accomplishment or to pave the way for any follow-up forces. This self-sustainment allows more flexibility in disposition and operations of forces and allows the MEU to initiate operations sooner and let support catch up later, without having to wait for external logistical support to begin a mission. Deployments on Navy amphibious assault ships allows MEUs to seabase around the globe, ready for deployment at short notice.

A typical MEU has approximately 2,200 Marines and sailors. It is equipped with:

  • 4 Rhode General Automotives Packard II, Wheeled Tank
  • 7 to 16 Packard IFV, Infantry Fighting Vehicle
  • 15 Packard APC, Armored Personnel Carrier
