Languages

Portuguese is the official language of Portugal. It is a Romance language that is derived from Galician-Portuguese, which was spoken in what is now Galicia and Northern Portugal. There are still strong similarities between the Galician and Portuguese cultures. Galicia is a consultative observer of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries.

The Portuguese language is derived from the Latin spoken by the romanized pre-Roman peoples of the Iberian Peninsula around 2000 years ago – particularly the Celts,[21] Conii,[263] Lusitanians[20] and Turduli.[264] In the 15th and 16th centuries, the language spread worldwide as Portugal established a colonial and commercial empire between 1415 and 1999.[265] Portuguese is spoken as a native language in five different continents, with Brazil accounting for the largest number of native Portuguese speakers of any country. In 2013 the Portuguese language is the official language spoken in Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, and East Timor. These countries, plus Macau Special Administrative Region (People's Republic of China) where Portuguese is co-official with Cantonese, make up the Lusosphere, a term derived from the ancient Roman province of "Lusitania", which currently matches the Portuguese territory south of the Douro river.[266]

Mirandese is also recognized as a co-official regional language in some municipalities of North-Eastern Portugal. It is part of the Astur-Leonese group of languages.[267] An estimate of between 6,000 and 7,000 Mirandese speakers has been documented for Portugal.[268] Furthermore, a particular dialect known as Barranquenho, spoken in Barrancos, is also officially recognized and protected in Portugal since 2021.[269] Minderico, a sociolect of the Portuguese language, is spoken by around 500 people in the town of Minde.[270]

According to the International English Proficiency Index, Portugal has a high proficiency level in English, higher than those of other Romance-speaking European countries like Italy, France or Spain.

MILITARY BASE SERVICE

The Armed Forces Base Service (AFBS) is the basic service to the Phoenixian Federal Army. It lasts for twelve months, during which young men and women will receive basic military training. The Navy and Air Force program lasts for fourteen months.

Before being summoned to the army, the soldiers go through two days of physical and psychological evaluation, to determine whether they are fit for conscription.

In general, Phoenixian citizens receive a general summons on the year they turn 18. However, they can still be called for the initial presentation and examination until they turn 64, and even later, depending on circumstances.

Besides not being fit for service, several exceptions exclude citizens from service, including if the men and women are in ongoing school or university education or other vocational preparation.

Employers can also request their workers to not be sent to military service.

Benefits and social assistance

There are a few benefits and assistance that people in the basic service can expect, including a monthly allowance and cash that add up to approximately $360 – which increases as with military rank.

Conscripts can also receive family maintenance payments, housing allowance and paid for travel expenses, depending on their needs.

During basic military service, they can also request an Phoenixian defense forces card that they can use to travel on the XX Phoenixian railway service.
