Qualifying began at 16:00 local time. Novia driver Kasran is'Vaara was blocked by traffic from various sources during his first flying laps of the first qualifying session (Q1), and by the time he was able to set an unimpeded lap time, rain had arrived and [[w:Drag Reduction System|DRS]] had been disabled by race control for safety reasons; although he was still able to run on the slick tyres, the track was wet enough to slow him down by an estimated three seconds.
