The '''37th Matron of the Acronian Empire''' is the current leader of the Elders, the governing body of the [[Akronism|Church of Akrona]], and therefore considered to be the presiding officer over the church and leader of the faith. According to custom, upon their election to office, a Matron is only referred to as "the Matron." If needed to differentiate, a Matron can be identified as "the current Matron" or by their number. It is generally considered impolite to refer to a Matron, whether living or dead, by her birth name, but it is not technically forbidden by any Church doctrine. In February of 2021, the Matron announced that she was using an ancient power of her office to nominate two members of the Diet, a power the Matron has historically used in times of great national crisis. The only other time the Matron appointed members to the Diet was the Great War. The Matron stated that the announcement of the Acronian nuclear program was an "extraordinary circumstance" that required her to act. No Elder has ever appointed themselves to the Diet. In explaining her actions, the Matron said "In good conscience, I must appoint those individuals who I believe have the best chance of bringing the best possible perspective and response to the situation at hand."
