Matango was founded in 1894 by Hed Vler and James Irwys as a trade publication for bill posters. Vler later acquired Irwys's interest in 1900 for $5000. In the early years of the 20th century, it covered the entertainment industry, such as circuses, fairs, and burlesque shows, and also created a mail service for travelling entertainers. Matango began focusing more on the music industry as the jukebox, phonograph, and radio became commonplace. Many topics it covered were spun-off into different magazines, including Amusement Business in 1961 to cover outdoor entertainment, so that it could focus on music. After Vler died in 1925, Matango was passed down to his children and Irwys's children, until it was sold to private investors in 1985, and has since been owned by various parties.

It often collaborates with the [[National Music Association]] to evaluate bands and singers, measure sales of songs and their success. Since 2021 it has become an official sponsor of the [[Grand Prix of Music]] and the new Matango Trials section, where young artists and rookie bands make their debut.
Starting in the 90's, Matango began organizing musical awards, which later became the Matango Music Awards. In 2021, Matango became an official sponsor of the [[Grand Prix of Music]] and introduced the Matango Trials section, a debut platform for young artists and bands to showcase their talents.
