Lapinumbia–Tretrid relations, also referred to as Lapinumbian–Tretridian relations or Tretridio–Lapinumbian relations, play an integral part in the geopolitics of South Novaris.

Formal diplomatic relations between Lapinumbia and Tretrid were established not longsoon after the Cynebury Conference of 1510, whichLapinumbia secured Lapinumbianfull independencesovereignty from Dallacqua and marked the endCelanor of the Third Tretridio-Dallacquan WarEmprire.<!--Note: it might not be the third, I need to talk with Turtle about that -Tret--> However, evidence shows that the two polities had been in communication as early as theTretridian Firstunification Tretridio-Dallacquan War ofin 12571256, as shown by a recovered letter sent by an ambassador of the then-new Kingdom of Tretrid to Vecitania.

Lapinumbia and Tretrid have maintained close ties in the modern day. There are numerous economic ties between the two countries, and they also enjoy a open border and a unified passport system that guarantees free passage between the two nations. As the two nations are both founding members of the League of Novaris, Tretrid and Lapinumbia often vote together in the League due to their many aligned interests.

History
Pre-Tretridian unification
Late Threnian records have been found that document the settlement of Norvian-speaking people south of the Threnian civilization. According to various historical sources, these Norvians would often partake in costal raids and presented a significant annoyance. However, the Norvians also engaged in a significant amount of trade in the region, often facilitating the exchange of goods between South and West Novaris.

The Republic of Lapinumbia consolidated power around its capital of Vecitania soon after it was founded and started establishing costal trading posts along the south coast of the Bay of Lapinum. While it would be some time before Lapinumbia would properly control the region, these outposts were used to trade with the proto-Tretridian states to the north. Surviving records from Westrice document cordial relationships between the nascent Republic and the then-dominant Western Kingdom.

As the Celanor Empire, the dominant power in West Novaris at the time, started to push its influence eastwards past the Nalpian mountains and into what would later become the southern Lapinumbian coast. Lapinumbia agreed to become a client state to Celanor, where it would receive imperial protection while maintaining the ability to handle its own internal affairs in exchange for being required to aid imperial authorities in the region where possible.
As Dallacqua, at the time the dominant power in West Novaris, started expanding east, Lapinumbia agreed to become a client state to avoid a potentially costly war. Westrice, however, collapsed to internal forces as well as due to Dallacquan encroachment. Records from the Triarchy era, which started about two centuries after the collapse of Westrice, discuss how Lapinumbia would sometimes struggle against its Dallacquan overlords for autonomy. As Dallacqua was the dominant power of the time, however, these power struggles were never successful.

Tretridian Anarchy and Lapinumbian gainsGolden Age
In 1256, after Ælfric I of Norþrenia conquered the two other Triarchal states and crowned himself King of Tretrid, he immediately turned west and attacked Dallacqua. The new Tretridian Kingdom, still highly militarized from its wars of unification, proved too much for Dallacqua, which was forced to give up its easternmost territories. After fortifying his newfound gains, Ælfric turned south.
Early 19th century
Aware that Lapinumbia could make a useful ally in the future, Ælfric dispatched ambassadors to Lapinumbia. The Lapinumbian doge welcomed the ambassadors warmly, and the two polities proceeded to establish cordial relations with each other. In 1262, Tretrid secretly agreed to support Lapinumbia if they appealed for aid against Dallacqua, in what was known as the Vecitania Agreement.

Rapprochement
The conclusion of the Tretridio-Lapinumbian War left the foundation of Lapinumbian power projection broken and shattered its image as South Novaris's dominant naval power.

Friendship
A declining Reiktic Empire, in an effort to take advantage of the situation and hoping to rejuvenate itself with militaristic fervor, launched an invasion of Bersaleria, kicking off a war in the 1880s. Worried that Reiktic encroachment would endanger its now largely uncontested dominance in South Novaris, and hoping to use Lapinumbia as a buffer against North Gondwana, Tretrid provided Lapinumbia with support before outright joining the war. Lapinumbia was eventually able to fight off the Reiktic invasion, and Lapinumbia would realign its foreign policy to be gradually more and more friendly with Tretrid. Tretrid and Lapinumbia would sign a non-aggression pact in 1893.

While Tretrid would ultimately get entangled in the Great War, Lapinumbia stayed out of the conflict and instead focused on profiting off of the economic turmoil that resulted from the war. One of the most notable manifestations of this policy was that it leased a portion of its dockyards to other countries. Tretrid was one major beneficiary of this program, using it to grow and maintain its fleet during the course of the war, though it would ultimately pay Lapinumbia billions of pounds for their use.

In the immediate aftermath of the Great War, with Tretrid weakened and in the midst of political turmoil, Lapinumbia considered a massive campaign of rearmament to challenge Tretrid's place as the dominant South Novaran power, but eventually decided against it with the belief that the dominant South Novaran power would inevitably end up in conflict with Volscina, and that saddling Tretrid with that rivalry would give Lapinumbia the strategic room to pursue its own agenda.

Novaran Cold War
The Lavoa Treaty's signature and ratification in 1943 between Lapinumbia, Tretrid, and Transnalpia created the Council of South Novaris, which sought to create an economic bloc that could more effectively represent its interests by acting collectively, though its scope would later expand as cooperation between the three countries increased. Despite this, Lapinumbia maintained official neutrality regarding Tretridian disputes with Volscina amidst the Novaran Cold War, and resisted Tretridian attempts to use the CSN's economic power against Volscina and its allies.

Lapinumbia served as a neutral mediator for talks involving Tretrid during this period, with the most notable being the Paravena Conference with Mirhaime in which the two agreed on a common framework regarding Ostretheia.
Since 2003
With the end of the Novaran Cold War in 2003, Lapinumbia started to favor cooperation with Tretrid more, as the potential geopolitical drawbacks that would have come during the Novaran Cold War were no longer present. This resulted in a trade agreement that further connected the economies of the two together, as well as the signature of the South Novaran Mutual Defense Treaty, which established a formal military alliance between the two countries. A third treaty, signed by the three Council of South Novaris nations, sought to completely open the borders between the CSN states, though Transnalpia ultimately never ratified it, leaving to the removal of border controls on just the border between Lapinumbia and Tretrid.

Both Tretrid and Lapinumbia were signatories of the Sixfold Declaration in 2017, which established the League of Novaris. In 2018, Lapinumbia and Tretrid signed an intelligence-sharing agreement aimed at mutually bolstering national security.

Tretrid and Lapinumbia both participated in the Balistrian Coalition War, with Tretrid acting on a bilateral alliance with Alksearia and Lapinumbia acting as a member of the Union of Commonwealth Alliances. Tretridian and Lapinumbian forces often worked together, though Lapinumbia's contribution focused primarily on logistical support for the coalition while Tretrid actively pursued a bombing campaign.
