It means "shallow seas" or "shallow waters". Its distribution reflects the geographical influence of the [[Wikipedia:Middle English\|Middle Staynish]] language. Lan is used primarily as a place-name suffix to follow a given name of a water area, the most famous example is the Staynicisation of the [[Wikipedia:Breton language\|~~Calth~~Kaltareg]] word for the [[Bishlan]], which was Aberbish and translated to "Bish rivermouth". The Staynicised version translates to "Shallow sea of the Bish".
