Lan is an archaic element in place-names of Staynish origin. It means "shallow seas" or "shallow waters". Its distribution reflects the geographical influence of the Middle Staynish language.

Lan is used primarily as a place-name suffix to follow a given name of a water area, the most famous example is the Staynicisation of the Kaltareg word for the Bishlan, which was Aberbish and translated to "Bish rivermouth". The Staynicised version translates to "Shallow sea of the Bish".
