Elektrizität der DDR is the state managed energy authority of East Cerdani, which deals with the generation, transmission, distribution, maintenance and sale of electricity and electrical infrastructure. EDDR was formed in 1935 from the amalgamation and centralisation of twenty-five separate generation and distribution units geographically dispersed across East Cerdani. Elektrizität der DDR is also responsible for managing the Cerdani Interconnected Network, the electrical grid that covers over 80% of East Cerdani.

History

Prior to the formation of Elektrizität der DDR most of East Cerdani's electricity came from twenty-five separate generation and distribution units spread out across the country, majority of them completely separate grids with little to no interconnection. In 1940 the central government organised the amalgamation of these into a single national entity, part of the ambitious energy policies of the time to encourage industrialisation and electrification of the whole country.

Generation and transmission was gradually centralised and expanded through the 1940s and 1950s, including the establishment of coal-fired power stations supplied by the Betzfels coalfields, conversion of all AC power to the national standard of 50Hz, high-voltage transmission lines, and eventually gas-fired power plants and hydroelectric projects. In 1962 East Cerdani officially became energy self-sufficient, ending decades of importing power from West Cerdani and other neighbouring countries, small scale electricity importation however unofficially continued until 1965. With the opening of the first transmission hall of the Bickhardt Dam in 1978 East Cerdani and West Cerdani begun small power sharing agreements, eventually leading to agreements in the mid 1980s allowing East Cerdani to sell and export electricity to West Cerdani.

Current Projects

Elektrizität der DDR is currently engaged in a number projects to move East Cerdani towards fully renewable and clean electricity generation. With the phase out of coal scheduled for no earlier than 2026 with a hard date of 2030.
