The Lapytians were the first advanced civilisation in the region from approximately 1950BCE on the upper course of the [[Ueclid River]]. The region there was well suited for agriculture, thanks to its drier summers, relatively meek springtime flooding and the ease of irrigating the alluvial floodplains. The capital of Lapyta was the largest and most influential city in the region, and established close links with many other towns and cities along the valley.
