2023 Attempted Bombing of the Côtois Embassy in Nuvrenon

On 7 March 2023, an attempted van bombing occurred outside of the Embassy of Federation, in Nuvrenon, Tavaris. The ultra-nationalist political group Emperor’s Loyalists, which has made previous attempts at removing the Federation’s embassy in Nuvrenon before through demonstrations and online activism. They became violent after the Tavari-Bana plane accident, focusing their efforts primarily on the Federation believing the Federation was orchestrating Bana to take hostile actions against the country.

The Attack

The attack was carried out at estimated 1:15 P.M. when the embassy employees were returning from their lunch break. The van crashed through the embassy’s hedges and rammed into the front doors of the building. Trapping a gardener of the embassy underneath the van. Sondre Albertsen, the gardener, lay unconscious until 2:28 P.M.

The Tavari police opened fire at the van as it was driving through the hedges. Resulting in the driver being shot dead and seriously injuring the passenger who later died in the van after thirty minutes. The two ELs who were in the back of the van opened the back doors and surrendered to the police officers. The bomb itself in the van failed to activate but was still considered to be a clear and present danger.

There were still several staffers inside of the embassy, who left through the emergency exits in the back and side of the building.

Tavari bomb squad arrived on scene at 2:21 P.M. Initially the plan was to remotely detonate the van until Albersen showed his hand from underneath the van and waved for assistance. The new plan was to use a drone to remotely disarm the bomb in order to prevent killing Albertsen. After the bomb was disarmed, the van was lifted and Albertsen was brought to a hospital.

Albertsen succumbed to his injuries in the hospital and passed away at 2:28 A.M. 8 March 2023.

Aftermath

The attack resulted in 8 injuries and one death. The two ELs members were arrested and charged with terrorism, first degree murder, unlawful use of a vehicle, possession of modified automatic weaponry. The EL members plead guilty to all counts and are now serving a life sentence at Nuvari maximum security prison.

In the injuries, 6 were Côtois and 2 were Tavari. The only death, Sondre Albertsen was from Dragefjord in the Federation.

Côtoise Foreign Minister, Angeline Firmin condemned the attack and held a moment of silence for the victims. On 12 March 2023, the Federation declared the Emperor’s Loyalists as a terrorist organization.
