On November 13, 2020, elections were held to elect members of the [[Oscrelian National Assembly]]. This election was marked with a level of political turmoil virtually unseen since 2004.

Ernest Harvey, the leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) and the Chancellor of Oscrelia, had voiced his intent to retire from politics, and refused to run for the Council in 2020. The DUP immediately underwent a power struggle as many Councilmen sought to succeed Harvey.

The DUP eventually decided to have Councilman Luke Fowler succeed Harvey as the leader. However, Fowler was a polarizing enough figure within the DUP that a significant contingent of DUP Councilmen split off and recreated the Oscrelian Conservative Party (OCP).

At the same time, Fowler announced his intention to stop working with the National Liberal Party (NLP) and began actively campaigning against them. Meanwhile, the Social Democrats (SDO), lead by Lauren Ryder, took advantage of the chaos to intensify their campaigning, pointing at the infighting within Harvey's coalition to portray the SDO as the natural alternative.

The result of this was that the Social Democrats managed to gain a significant amount of votes, managing to gain the plurality over the severely weakened DUP. However, Ryder's refusal to negotiate made the SDO unable to form a government, leading to a hung parliament. This culminated in Ryder's ouster on December 14.

The SDO quickly chose Councilwoman Melissa Chester to lead the party, who quickly struck a deal with Councilman Paul Little of the Green Party (GPO), forming a coalition government with Chester as Chancellor.
