In 2016, federal elections were held to elect the 38th Assembly. This election once again saw the victory of Ernest Harvey's coalition. However, the new, ambitious leader of the SDO, Lauren Ryder, had the SDO leave the DUP-NLP coalition, severely weakening Harvey's coalition government.
