Surkova graduated from [[Ozyoretsk Federal University]] and [[Ilyushin University|Ilyushin University School of Law]]. She worked for five years as a criminal prosecutor in the Mahigorod District Attorney's Office and three years as a prosecutor in the [[Volkian Federal Attorney|Federal Attorney's Office]] in Volkgoroda, before being elected Ozyoretsk minister of justice in 2001, replacing Vadim Ikanov. Reelected in 2005, she resigned from her position in order to take her seat in the [[Federal Council]] following her victory in the 2008 elections. Surkova served two terms as a Federal Councilor before winning her party's nomination for the [[2016 Volkian presidential election]].
 
Surkova won 63.71% of the vote in the second round of voting and became the first woman to hold the office of the presidency, as well as becoming the second youngest person to hold the office.
