The military of the Acronian Empire is the [[Royal Acronian Armed Forces]]. While citizens are no longer required to serve in the military, many choose to serve in the reserves, of which there were approximately 2.5 million servicemembers in 2020. The law allows for conscription to resume in the event of a defensive war, in which case all adult citizens would be called back into reserve status to begin training. These reserves would be drawn from as needed onto the front lines. The law does not allow for wartime conscription if the Acronian Empire has not been directly attacked.
All citizens, male and female, are required to serve a total of 36 months in the Acronian military, except those in the clergy. Mandatory enrollment is upon graduation from high school, unless enrolled in a post-secondary educational institution (in which case it is postponed) or training to join the clergy. Conscientious objectors are usually assigned to community/public service roles in the Marshals (the national police) or the Coast Guard, also a division of the Marshals, but cannot gain exemption from service without joining the Church. Those who enter clergy training but do not complete must enter the service upon leaving the seminary. Exemptions are made for medical reasons, or if a child is the only child of a family, although parents must seek such an exemption; it is not automatic.
Including the Royal Acronian Marshals, the total number of active duty Acronian troops is 950,129. The Marshals are the primary police force for the entire country, as only three cities ([[Zaram]], Dravai, and Lantaž) have established independent, civilian police departments. The Marshals also include the Coast Guard Division and the Border and Immigration Control Division. Excluding the Marshals, who would not be counted among military personnel in many countries, the number of Acronian troops is 750,106.
After serving a full 18 months in active service, citizens enter into what is called statutorily "active reserve status" for another 18 months. These people continue semi-regular training exercises and are eligible to be called upon in the event of a crisis. Citizens are fully released after three years, except in the event of war. In times of national invasion, all able-bodied citizens aged 30 and under are called back into active reserve status and immediately begin training; reserves are drawn from as needed to defend the country. The law does not allow for all able-bodied citizens to be called into service in the event that the country is not being actively attacked by a hostile opposing force. After their mandatory service, individuals who wish to remain involved in the military but not in active duty can choose to voluntarily remain in reserve status. Voluntary membership in the reserves is referred to as "non-active reserve status."
The Acronian Empire maintains a blue-water navy capable of deployment across the world, although a majority of operations are conducted within the Acronian EEZ, or alongside fellow [[Union of Commonwealth Alliances|UCA]] members in international joint operations. The Empire maintains one nuclear-powered submarine with one more expected to be delivered in 2021, and two diesel-electric aircraft carriers. On January 19th, 2021, Acronis announced that it had begun a nuclear weapons program through both a native production program and through an agreement with [[Vistaraland]]. The two countries will continue to cooperate in nuclear weapons research and development. Acronis does not maintain a [[wikipedia:nuclear triad|nuclear triad]], instead maintaining sea and air-based nuclear weapons systems. Acronis does not maintain biological or chemical weapons.
Under the Acronian statutory definition of "active duty," there are a total of 2,556,880 active duty soldiers in the armed forces. However, this number includes several groups that are not normally considered "active duty" internationally, including (as of 2020) the 1,604,396 conscripted soldiers serving in "active reserve" status, and the Royal Acronian Marshals, which consists of the National Police Division, Coast Guard Division, and Border and Immigration Control Division. As of 2020, there were an estimated 200,000 members of the Marshals, which is the only police force in the country except for three municipal police departments. Excluding both of these groups from the count would result in a core "active duty" count of 1,054,397.
The Acronian Empire is a signatory to international conventions banning torture and the use of chemical and biological weapons. It has not signed any international accord regarding nuclear weapons, but present government policy is to not develop such a capacity, and nuclear weapons remain consistently unpopular with the Acronian people.
