The earliest settlement in what is now known as Sayyed was near the River Ashur, called Salaharkesh, the founding being dated to around 1300 BCE by archeologists. In a 1987 excavation, archeologists found intricate art and pottery at around the time, as well as the first examples of Sayyed’s earliest writing system: abhad, in several clay tablets around the new metropolis. |

Records reveal that for most of its history, Salaharkesh, and eventually the Ashurian Kingdom was ruled by monarchs one of the first being King Niiqiarusu the Great, who wrote the basis of the declaration of the Kingdom of Ashur in 1000 BCE. Niiqiarusu was regarded as “A wise and dignified ruler who made significant changes to the kingdom and has made an impact so large it is still felt many generations after his passing.” During Niiqiarusu’s reign was when the Ashurian Code was written. A text detailing every law and every punishment for when the laws were broken. |
