Sonia (stylized as SONIA) is a Genesi/Nagatoian pop duo from Taniguchi, South Genesis and Greenwood, Nagato that formed in 2019. The group consisted of Sonia Dawn (songwriter, vocals, and drum machine) and Rosa May (songwriter and vocals). After a chance meeting at a club in Greenwood, Dawn and May created SONIA after they flipped a coin to see who the newly created band would be named after. They released their debut album “Wonderland” on April 18, 2020.

Sonia (stylized as SONIA) was a Nagatoian pop duo from Akai Machi, Nagato that formed in 1995 and disbanded in 1998. The group consisted of Jun Ozaki and Boogie Burns. Not much is known about the group due to the two members being very secretive about their personal lives. They are best known for their hit song, Love Will Leave You Crying, which was used as the opening song to the anime, Tenchi Universe, in 1995.
History
SONIA started with Sonia Dawn and Rosa May as two independent musicians in the late 2010s.

Born in Taniguchi, South Genesis on September 23, 2000, Sonia Dawn grew up in a musical family. Her parents are famous Genesi musicians Hilbert and Hilda Dawn in their group, Dusk to Dawn. For her 18th birthday, Dawn’s parents gifted her a Roland TR-909 drum machine for her to use to make her own music in the way she wants. Later that year, Dawn moved to Greenwood to start her independent career in music.

Born in Greenwood, Nagato on June 12, 2000, Rosa May grew up in a strict household on the western side of town. Her father wanted her to marry Kyon II when they both were at the right age, however, the then Grand Duke John II has repealed the request time and time again and decided that Kyon II should make that decision. Although not opposed to marrying him, May wanted to pursue her passion for music instead.

On June 10, 2019, the Royal Ruby in Greenwood had an open mic, and both Dawn and May showed up along with a few dozen people to try out. Among the audience was a promoter from Yuki Labels who was trying to find the next big thing in Nagato. Dawn performed Take Off (a song that she wrote and would, later on, edit with May) and May performed her song I’ll Be There. After the event, the two met up and had a few drinks to celebrate each other’s performances. The promoter came up to them and congratulated them on their performances and asked if they would like to do it full time. That’s when May asked Dawn if she would like to be part of a band and go global. Dawn replied with an excited yes and the three drank to it.

SONIA’s name comes from flipping a coin on who gets to pick the name. May picked tails, so Dawn got heads. Dawn has said SONIA comes from, “My first two and fourth letters in my name S-N-I, and May’s vowels in her name O-A, combined them and you get SONIA! I wanted to name it after myself, but I also wanted to include May in the name so that she is connected to the band.”

SONIA released their first album “Wonderland” on April 18, 2020. The album had their first number one hit with “Love Will Leave You Crying”, which has seen over 6 million downloads within the first two weeks of release. Their second album “Universal” has been announced for an early 2021 release.
