History
The area was first colonised by Cavan settlers from the Kormistazic Empire beginning in the 12th century CE. The area that is today Quariin is the former heartland of Kormistazic settlement in southern Arcturia and would later form the heartland of the Lousquarii Empire which broke away from the Auroran mainland in the late 16th century. This empire, however, rapidly collapsed as various regions sought their own independence, . The first Quariin Republic, which represented the last vestiges of the Lousquarii Empire, was declared in 1586.

The First Republic Era was politically dominated by a wealthy merchant class that consisted primarily of former Kormistazic noble families who fled the collapse of continental Kormistazm. While democratic on paper, the merchant oligarchs held most de facto political power. The First Republic fell in 1788 after a military coup backed by Morstaybishlia, which had long seen Quariin's economic influence as a threat to its geopolitical dominance over south Arcturia.

The new military government lacked almost any pretence of democracy and was marked by significant amounts of corruption, with originally more meritocratic institutions having their hierarchy replaced by one of patronage. The government was largely pro-MBE in alignment, benefiting from trade with the colonial powers of Morstaybishlia and Vistaraland, though corruption soon saw these benefits extend only to the new ruling class. In the immediate aftermath of the coup, Akronist missionaries arrived from north-central Arcturia to provide sapientarian aid and to spread their faith. The junta was generally unstable and fell in 1854 when Lanós Belafrazi, a popular low ranking military figure and descendant of the former oligarchic class, rode a wave of popular support in an uprising against the government. She would declare herself Emperor of Quariin, beginning the New Quariin Empire with promises of Bread, Glory and Independence.

In this era, relations between Quariin and the MBE soured as the new Quariin government attempted to distance itself to reach their acclaimed goals. However, with less outside support, the economy began to struggle. The New Empire began to starve, suffering food riots for much of its history leading to a marked increase in Akronist presence as they sought to provide charity to the hungry - an Akronist religious doctrine - where the Empire had failed them. Eventually, in a bid to regain Morst support, the New Empire attempted to join the Great War on the side of MBEPAX. This led to even more riots, this time against conscription. A democratic revolution overthrew the New Empire in 1908.

The Second Quariin Republic was first politically dominated by one political party, the Revolutionary Chartist League (RCL), a left-wing, anti-Morst bloc based around the People's Charter of Quarii Liberty and Solidarity, drafted by a group of Socialists during the period of the New Empire. While they were successful in preventing Quariin involvement in the Great War, eventually a political rift began to form between religious Akronist leftists and secular leftists who disdained religion as, in the words of Marx, “the opiate of the masses.” These two groups would come to be known as the Anti-Opiate and Opiate factions. The Anti-Opiates decried Akronists as having propped up the corrupt Empire by providing charity rather than fighting for change. The Opiates, in turn, shunned the Anti-Opiates as immoral, cruel, and repressive.

An Anti-Opiate coup overthrew the Second Republic in 1968. The Socialist Republic was explicitly atheist, and religious leaders faced political persecution. It fought on the side of Noroist Axdel in the Auroran Imperial War, able to force a stalemate but with a requirement that Quariin pay steep reparations to Morstaybishlia. The reparations (on top of the repression) served as a breaking point for political opponents of the regime, who coalesced under the banner of the Akronist-Kozam Unified Front of Resistance (A-KU). In 1979, mass protests across the country began as the A-KU attempted to agitate the government. A right-wing faction in the Quariin government attempted to take advantage of the chaos to overthrow the Socialist Republic by instituting martial law.

While the military was successful in forcing the government to flee the capital—at that time, the city of New Kenuqii—the A-KU and the RCL encouraged the public to undertake a general strike against the would-be military junta. With the military forces unable to overcome the popular opposition, the Third Republic was established as a compromise.

The Third Republic formally began on 1 May 1979. The capital of the country was moved from New Kenuqii to the city of Lanozza, newly constructed in the central interior of the country following the abandonment of the project by the New Quariin Empire. A formalised split of the Opiate and Anti-Opiate factions led to a multi-party democracy that remains generally stable into the present day and has been, on the whole, more moderate than previous regimes. Modern day Quariin enjoys warm relations with Axdel but continues to see some tension with Morstaybishlia based upon the historical animosity between the two countries.
