The city of Žrat Zaram (Tavari-Acronian: blood of Zaram), typically referred to as just Zaram, is the capital and largest city of the Acronian Empire. As of 2020 census estimates, the Zaram metropolitan area has a population of 6.1 million people. Of these, approximately 3.8 million live in the city of Zaram proper. Prior to the Tavari Civil War, the city served as the first capital of the Kingdom of Tavaris, beginning in 1300 CE.
The city of Nuvrenon is the capital and largest city of Tavaris. As of 2020 census estimates, the Nuvrenon metropolitan area has a population of 6.1 million people. Of these, approximately 3.8 million live in the city of Nuvrenon proper. The city has served as the capital of Tavaris since unification in 1304 CE, and prior to that, it served as the base of power of Line Nuvo, the Tavari clan that would eventually assume the monarchy.

The city of Zaram and its surrounding metropolitan area is served by the Transportation Authority of the City of Žrat Zaram, known as EZŽZ.

History
The current city was incorporated by Acronian royal charter issued in 1499, but settlement in the area dates back at least two thousand years. The island on which Zaram sits, King's Island, is believed to have been the first of the Acronian home islands to have been inhabited by the Tavari, who arrived in northwest Gondwana at the turn of the first century CE. Earlier settlements were on the western and northern coasts of King's Island, and later Tavari would cross the Strait of Kings and expand onto the island known as Avnatra.

Earlier settlements were on the western and northern coasts of King's Island, and later Tavari would cross the Strait of Kings and expand onto the island known as Avnatra.

Previously known as "Nuvomi," the city was already the largest city in Tavaris at the turn of the 13th century CE. However, after it became the national capital (at which time it was named "Nuvrenon"), King Utor I and his immediate successors undertook a major effort to modernize the city - as well as fortify it against the Raonite incursion onto King's Island that also occurred around the same time. As a result, much of the city's previous architecture was destroyed, and there are relatively few remaining archaeological artifacts remaining from the era prior to the 14th century.
Previous names for Zaram include Nuvomi and Nuvrenon. (The latter would later be re-used by the Tavari as the name for their new capital on mainland Gondwana.) It was the Chief of the Nuvo Clan who would eventually unite the disparate Tavari chiefdoms under the single banner of the Kingdom of Tavaris in the year 1300, at which time he made the city, where the clan had been based for some centuries, the national capital. Historical sources either use the name Nuvrenon for the city or call it by the name "New Royal Castle," which appears to have been used in at least some official government texts at the time. The city was almost completely reconstructed during the 14th century, and very little archaeological evidence of what the settlement looked like prior remains.

The city was the last of the major cities in what is now Acronis to fall in the Tavari Civil War, as the Akronists moved from their initial base of power in the northwest (at Crystal Coast) to the capital city. The city saw almost no actual combat, and in comparison to many other southern Acronian cities, much of its 14th century architecture remains intact, including the Royal Palace. Rather than conduct an expensive construction project to build new government buildings, the Acronians simply moved into and used the pre-existing Tavari buildings, including the palace, which are still in active use today.

Etymology
The city's name was chosen by King Utor I, who created the name himself. The previous name of the city, Nuvomi, had simply meant "Nuvo town." Utor combined the word Nuvo with the Tavari word "vrenon," which at that time was already an archaic term meaning "palace." Also in the word is the Tavari word "uvren," an adjective meaning "safe" or "protected." King Utor was a staunch believer in the ancient Tavari customs of ancestral veneration he would later have codified into the Tavat Avati. Utor's intent was to select a name that was particularly auspicious, and that would please the spirits of his ancestors and encourage them to bless the city and the new country with wealth and prosperity and keep threats at bay. Tavari troops had expelled all Raonites from King's Island by the end of the 14th century, and Nuvrenon has never been invaded by a foreign hostile power, including all six of the wars with Bana.
The city's name, which means "the blood of Zaram," is in honor of the last Tavari King who held the territory of what is today called Acronis, King Zaram. In the final battle of the Tavari Civil War (called the "War of Foundation" by most Acronians), Zaram elected to surrender to the Akronists rather than subject the people of the city to an extended siege. The Akronists allowed the Tavari loyalists to leave the city unharmed and killed only King Zaram. That the King "sacrificed himself" to protect his people was apparently personally touching to the leader of the Akronists, King Davras, who named the city in honor of the sacrifice. It is commonly said that "the only blood spilled to take the capital was Zaram's."

In the modern day, it is increasingly rare to see the city's full name used. Most maps list it simply as "Zaram," even those issued by the government. The city is capital of Zaram Province, whose full name is in fact simply "Zaram" Province. However, the full name is still used in such places as the Žrat Zaram Stock Exchange.

History

The current city was incorporated by Tavari royal charter issued in 1304, but settlement in the area dates back at least two thousand years. The island on which Nuvrenon sits, King's Island, is believed to have been the first of the Tavari home islands to have been inhabited by the Tavari, who arrived in northwest Gondwana at the turn of the first century CE.
