Nancy was the second-choice replacement for [[Delores Gastrell]], who was diagnosed with [[wikipedia:Idiopathic giant-cell myocarditis|giant cell myocarditis (GCM)]]. Gastrell quickly came to the view that Jarsdel would be the best choice as her successor, and gave her valuable behind-the-scenes backing. She let it be known that if she recovered she would be willing to serve as a member of a Jarsdel cabinet. She had earlier favoured Luke Rurin, but changed her mind when she learned from the Morstaybishlian ambassador to Salovia, that their administration was uneasy at the prospect of Rurin as Prime Minister, and from her chief whip that Rurin, seen as a right-winger, would alienate moderate voters.
