The position was established after the Treaty of the Republic was signed in 1921, and is directly elected every five years. Term limits for president were established in 1963, however they were abolished in 1999 by [[Luis Souza]]. Presidents are elected with their vice presidents on March 1 and inaugurated on May 1 of the same year.
