The Kohatu Isles are a semi-autonomous dependent territory of The Oan Isles. The government of the Oan Isles is responsible for monetary, defense, foreign and trade policy. Moreover, the founding law of the Kohatu Isles - the Kohatu Basic Law - requires the consent of the government of the Oan Isles to amend. The political systems of the Kohatu Isles shares many of the tenets of Oan political system: constitutional monarchy and parliamentary multi-party democracy.

The Chief Minister of the Kohatu Isles is the head of government and directs and controls the running of the executive branch. As the leader of the largest political party in the Legislative Assembly of the Kohatu Isles, the Chief Minister is the most powerful political official in the country. This position is held by the former leader of the defunct National Liberation Movement, Opal Lazuli. Her government consists of other former senior leaders of that organization such as Sappire Sardonyx, Moissanite and her husband Lazuli. The executive branch consists of the Executive Council and each member thereof is responsible for overseeing an executive portfolio. The Emperor of Polynesia as the head of state of the Oan Isles appoints the Chief Minister with the approval of the Kohatu Legislative Assembly and appoints other members of the Executive Council on the recommendation of the Chief Minister.
The political system is dependent on the Oan Isles. Therefore, it takes place in the framework of a constitutional monarch and parliamentary democracy. The country shares a head of state with other members of the Polynesian Union, the Emperor of Polynesia. Because the monarch resides in the Oan Isles for much of the year, he appoints the Viceroy to exercise the role of the monarch on his behalf. This includes signing laws, and other legal instruments, and attending various events. The monarch has the right to warn, encourage and be informed.

The Kohatu Legislative Assembly is a unicameral chamber elected by citizens of the Kohatu Isles via run-off voting for individual candidates of electoral districts. The Kohatu Legislative Assembly has the power to pass laws and approve the annual budget. It can only amend the Basic Law with the approval of the National Assembly of the Oan Isles. All laws passed by the Legislative Assembly are approved by the Emperor of Polynesia. By convention, the Emperor will never refuse to sign and approve a law except in a crisis. The Emperor opens annual sessions of the Legislative Assembly with an address prepared by the Chief Minister.
The National Assembly comprises the legislative branch and is presided over by the Speaker. The National Assembly passes laws and elects the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister is the head of government and usually the leader of the largest coalition or party in the National Assembly. The Prime Minister appoints a Cabinet comprised of Ministers of the Crown who head government departments.

The judicial branch of the Kohatu Isles administers justice and enforces the law. The High Court is the highest judicial body nevertheless all cases can be appealed to the Supreme Court of the Oan Isles. The High Court is appointed by the Emperor of Polynesia on the advice of the Chief Minister following recommendations by the Kohatu Judicial Appointments Commission. The courts carry out justice in the name of the Emperor. The judiciary is protected from political interference as neither the executive or legislative branches or the Oan government can interfere in their work. Magistrate Courts administer trials.
The judicial system is comprised of the Supreme Court and various courts. It dispenses justice, settles disputes and ensures that laws conform to the Constitution of the Kohatu Isles. The Constitution is the supreme law. It provides for a democratic system of government. It delineates the areas of responsibility granted exclusively to or administered jointly by the Oan and Kōhatuan governments, and it can only be amended with the consent of both governments.

Under this system, the Oan government has exclusive jurisdiction over defence, foreign affairs and monetary policy. They share jurisdiction over issues such as oil and trade. Most other issues remain the sole responsibility of the Kōhatuan government. Citizens of the Kōhatu Isles are not automatically citizens of the Oan Isles, and vice versa, but have distinct political, economic and personal rights as subjects of the Crown.

The incumbent Prime Minister is Papa Palaoakole, the leader of the Socialist Democratic Party and the former leader f the now defunct NLM. The NLM was the foremost indigenous movement for the liberation of the Kohatu Isles from a one-party dictatorship. It was disbanded upon liberation and annexation by the Oan Isles to prevent a one-party state from forming again.
