The first two decades of the 20th century saw over 11,000 conscripted men from Ember Valley die in combat as part of offensives by the Imperial Powers. Of the nearly 50,000 who returned, nearly half were severely wounded, and they returned to a governorship that had lost an estimated 140,000 civilians to food and medicine shortages between 1905 and 1917.
