Etymology

The official name of Banteay is actually three names, the New Imperial Dynasty of the Elven Kingdom of Banteay, la Nueva Dinastía Imperial del Reino Kalat de Bantai, and Reachovongsa Akthireach Thmei Anachakr Kaohlat Banteay, in the respective diplomatic, official, and religious languages of Banteay. The name denotes its monarchical structure, Imperial history, and Kaohlat Elven majority.

The word “Banteay” in the Niyeay language of Banteay, means “Fortress.” The name originally denoted the palace-city of the ancient Akthireach, the Emperor of the early society. In these times, there was no need to refer to the country as a whole - the people were the Kaohlat and the world was the Sakallok. When the country came into contact with surrounding Kingdoms, and chose its name as a political entity, it chose the name “Banteay,” to refer to its capital and to denote its status as a stronghold for the faithful Kaohlat people. The demonym of Banteay, in all forms, is Banteay.

The “Bantai” spelling of “Banteay” is a valid form in Staynish and Impelantan, and typically interchangeable with “Banteay” in most parts of the world. It is often used, though, by non-practitioners of the Banteay form of Tunseism, who have little to no understanding of the Niyeay language. Most Banteay, and especially most religious Banteay, spell it in its traditional, Niyeay form, even in Staynish or Impelantan. There is no difference in pronunciation, however.
