The 2015 elections resulted in the return of the Conservative Coalition as the majority party with the Democratic Alternative becoming the leading minority party
[[Omer Sargento]] leader of the Democratic Alternative and outgoing Leader of the majority resigned on election night after failing to win another majority mandate. The leader of the National Assembly of Independents resigned one month after the election and [[Albano Peres]] became leader on 22 February 2016 following a leadership campaign. [[Tristão Prova]] leader of the [[New Socialist Option (Andorinhões)|New Socialist Option]] announced that he would not be running in the 2019 election and was replaced by [[Meritxell Capela]] on 16 April 2017. [[Balbina Palmeira]] of the [[League of Progressive Forces (Andorinhões)|League of Progressive Forces]] was challenged from her leadership position and was replaced by [[Elianne Arciveiro]] on 23 June 2019.
The political party [[Unity of the Cross Party (Andorinhões)|Unity of the Cross]] was formed on 6 August 2017 with [[Éric Laranjeiras]] as its leader.
The electoral calendar is fixed by law and the electoral campaign was set to begin on 5 August 2019 lasting 29 days with the vote taking place on 2 September 2019.
